Agent Carol Torres

Anyone near the break room would hear melodious humming as a bushy tailed agent approached with several shopping tote bags on her shoulders.

Agent Carol Torres laid a red laced napkin on a table and set out several clear plastic tubs of cookies shaped like hearts, each clearly labeled with the contents. She set a Valentine’s greeting card behind the cookies that said “Happy Valentine’s Day! You are appreciated and special. Thank you for being a part of our SHUSH family. Help yourself! Two cookies per agent, please, until eight pm. Then feel free to come back for seconds. :) Have a great day!”

About

The daughter of a police officer and a stage actress and singer, Carol has always had a strong sense of justice and an ingrained need to “entertain”/care for people. Her cookies are to die for, and she spends half her time on weekends baking, and the other half visiting her parents. She’s a speed reader and highly trained at memory retrieval so she catalogs and stores tons of information mentally while she goes through SHUSH paperwork.

Carol went over Connor’s message carefully and forwarded it to Director Hooter. He’d know what to do. She pondered over who this “she” was, and listened to the recording Connor had sent. “Amy.” That must be Amelia, the Eggwoman who defected from FOWL! Carol looked up Hartshell’s record and found where she was employed, and found the warehouse Connor was going to. Using her police credentials, Carol checked on traffic cameras and public security cameras in the area to search for the kidnapper and check Esmerelda’s security measures. There wasn’t much that she could see on the cameras, or on satellite. They’d need a drone in the area to get a clearer view. Typing up a report while she investigated, Carol forwarded everything she learned to Agent Gryzlikoff.
While technically they were not a sewrch and rescue team, and they did not negotiate with terrorists, as Connor had recalled, they did look out for their own. Agent Connor’s life was in jeopardy and Carol did what she could to try to arrange for backup to arrive on the scene some time after Connor, while trying to learn more about the mysterious woman who had kidnapped Amy.

A message was sent to Carol's phone from Connor.

"Heyyyy, mom... I think I'm being blackmailed. I'm supposed to come alone and stuff and there's cameras and everything and I know it's stupid and against SHUSH rules but I have to go. She doesn't deserve to die. Besides, I'm a rookie agent, so I technically don't know much information. If you decide to do anything please don't accidentally kill us both, bye I love you~"

With his message, he left the recording of his conversation with the blackmailer as well.

“Um...” Carol was just as befuddled when the child started listing off all the people she considered to be her moms. “Kidnapped? What- Hm? Oh, um. Alright. Goodbye, Gosalyn.”

Carol blinked in confusion as the girl scampered off. “Why does it sound like she collects well meaning people like dolls...?”
She shook her head in amusment, tucked the overly sweet cookie away to sample with tea and yogurt later, and went back to work.

((OOC: This probably happened before Sweet Pretender.))

From the blank look Gosalyn was now giving her? Probably the latter.

"Does it have to be legal?" she asked curiously. "I have another mom back home who spends time with me, and is always there whenever i'm sad, or need a hug. I also have a mom-" by this point, Carol would probably be wondering what was going on "-who kidnapped me, but everything worked out, and she took me on a broomstick ride, and then later she brought dad and I to the coolest amusement park ever! One of my moms is an angel. She broke through the wall of a hospital to make sure I was safe! They're all so sweet."

She seemed like she wanted to say more, but her phone beeped with an alarm. she blinked as she looked at it. "Oh, dear. I'm going to be late at volunteering at the animal shelter! I have to go! It's been great talking to you, mo- Miss Carol! Bye!"

                    And then she was gone.

“I see... I don’t know why Agent Connor started calling me that. I guess he feels calling me Carol or Agnet Torres would be too formal.
“Let’s see... It is true that a mom loves and cares for the people in her life, but it’s a little more than that, Gosalyn. Moms take responsibility, financially and otherwise, for the life and health of their family, too. A real mom has permission to make decisions for you when you can’t make them for yourself. I don’t mind you calling me whatever you want, but I can’t be a real mother to you, Sweetheart. I can’t legally make decisions about your health, upbringing, schooling, or where you go if your dad isn’t home. Do you understand or am I confusing you?”

Gosalyn beamed with pride. "You think so? Thank you! I think you're a great baker too, that's why I asked for your opinion!"

She suddenly looked embarrassed. "Uh, well, someone once told me a mom is someone who loves you and cares for you. And I've seen Agent Connor calling you mom. You've been lovely to me."

Also she... sort of forgot her name and 'mom' sounded very appropriate.

“I’m sure it will turn out wonderfully. You’re such a great baker already!” Carol warmly returned her hug, chuckling at Gosalyn’s apology.
“It’s totally fine. It’s a hundred times better than my strawberry tartes or shortbread jellies. Also adults have slightly different taste buds than kids, so things that might taste horrible to you, taste fine to us, and vice versa. In general, adults don’t enjoy as much sugar as kids do. But I think you have great taste.”

After a moment, the collie tilted her head.
“I’m curious though. Why did you call me ‘Mom’?”

Gosalyn took out a notepad and started to jot down notes seriously, like a pupil in class- no, not even a student would be that attentive.

"That makes a lot of sense! Thanks, mom! I'm sorry you had to taste it," she hugged Carol again, apologetically. "I'll be sure to show you improvements when I bake those cookies again!"

“It’s a very good cookie. It just needs to make up its mind on whether it wants to be a sugar cookie, or a butter cookie,” Carol chuckled. “If it’s going to a be sugar cookie, and you really like the look of the lustre dust, you can cut back on some of the sugar in the batter, or substitute brown sugar to make it a little less overwhelmingly sweet. If you were going toward a shortbread type, then I’d omit the lustre dust entirely and use a drop of food dye for coloring. Beet juice makes a nice natural pink dye.”

"Oh, no," Gosalyn gasped when Carol had to wash down the sugar. "I'm so sorry! I didn't realise!"

She had tasted it beforehand, but she couldn't really tell what was too much and what wasn't. And now Carol was suffering for it.

She blinked, then blushed when Carol complimented her on the other qualities of the cookie.

"No. Would that help? I'll give you the recipe for the jelly if you'd like!"
