Just Another Day At The Office (RP)

((OOC: technically open RP to anyone that is a member of S.H.U.S.H. If your character has a paranormal/magic/monster background and you haven't received a message from me about this RP please message me for some needed OOC info before joining the RP.))

After passing through S.H.U.S.H security Agent Gemini made her way up to where the offices were. She was certain she was supposed to have someone escort her to give her a tour. However, she had shown up several hours early. Gemini felt would have no problem following the office building’s signs to know where to go.

The new agent was carrying a wooden box filled with your average office desk items. Things including various pens, a novelty stapler, business cards, and some knick knacks for decoration.

Since Gemini’s hands were full with the box she held she had to cleverly get through doors. Usually hooking her pinky into the handle to open the door, then squeeze a shoulder between the door and the frame to push it open wider and slide right in. She was pretty smooth at it, like generally used to doing things like this all by herself.

At the elevator she hit the up button with her elbow. Once inside the elevator the agent did the same to hit the floor needed. While waiting she leaned on the back wall of the elevator. She assumed there would be a particular area paranormal agents would be placed. If there was she was sure she would figure it out once she got to the office floor.

Before the elevator doors could close, a tall lion agent stuck his foot in the door and hopped inside. Barely passing a glance at the unfamiliar duck, he promptly turned his back to her to punch the floor number for his destination, and the Close Doors button. Agent Kevion Anca waited; silent, sullen, and smelling of coffee, warm fur, Calvin Klein, and shea butter.

The elevator went up one floor and stopped. A collie entered, offering both agents a smile as she took a spot near the newcomer.

“Good morning, Agent Gemini. Oh goodness, that looks bulky. Do you need any help carrying anything?” Nevermind that Agent Carol Torres had a stuffed messenger bag on her own shoulder.

Gemini glanced at the lion in the elevator before smiling at Carol. She recognized the collie that entered the elevator.

“Good morning! I really don’t need any help with carrying this. But thanks for offering! More need help with making sure I'm headed the right way,” she chuckled. Gemini gave Kevion a glance  then leaned in to Carol to whisper, “I don't remember reading anything about a dress code. I hope I'm not under dressed. I thought a blouse and suit jacket would be fine for office days.”

Carol wagged her tail.  “Certainly. Some of the signs have not been updated since the last renovation, so there are a few places where directions can be confusing. I can show you the way after I drop off a case file.”

She lowered her voice. “Yes, you look fine. Gray is our standard suit color, but we have the option of wearing either a gray dress, a gray skirt with a white dress shirt and tie with gray suit coat, or gray slacks.” Leaning even closer, she whispered.  “The director is not a stickler for appearances, but some agents are more rigid regarding overall conformation and group cohesiveness.”

She glanced pointedly at the lion across from them to silently include him in the “rigid” category.

Kevion dutifully ignored them, making no sign that he had heard the whispering, although it would have been hard to miss. His tail swished slightly.

Where was background music when you need it?

The elevator stopped and Carol moved to the door. “I’ll catch up with you after I deliver this file.”

“Okay! See you soon then. Hopefully I won't get too lost,” Gemini replied to Carol as then the doors closed. She committed  the dress code information to memory.

She was pretty sure she had only one more floor up to where the offices were. Boy this elevator was slow. Gemini glanced at the lion again, “Hi, so what division do you work for? I do more paranormal investigating but often get stuck with regular criminal stuff.”

An ear twitched and a green gold eye turned to acknowledge the newcomer.

“‘Regular criminal stuff’ is my area of expertise.” Kevion replied softly. His quiet tone and bare minimum amount of body language did not hide his annoyance at being interrupted from... From what exactly? What is there to do on an elevator besides stare at the floor numbers?

Speaking of floor numbers, Kevion noted what buttons were lit and pressed another one.

“The Paranormal Division is headed by Agent Trevor Mallard. You’ll find him and his colleague on this floor.” Indicating the newly pressed button.  At least this time he sounded like a normal person giving directions.

“Oh! Thank you!” Gemini replied to the sudden help the lion gave. She stopped leaning on the back wall of the elevator and stood up straight.

“I'm sorry if ‘regular criminal stuff’ came off as dismissive of your work. I actually look up to that kind of law enforcement. I've had some interesting paranormal  jobs where there was no organization or format and really just using basic knowledge from a few criminal justice classes back in college and watching too much Law and Disorder to set some standards and next thing you know you are promoted twice for having common sense.”

“Yes, well, it was either become a cop or a lawyer, or politician. I picked the job that required the least amount of talking.” Kevion rolled his eyes to himself. He glanced back at Gemini. “Was it really that easy for you to join SHUSH?”

The elevator dinged and stopped. He held the “doors open” button with his tail as he listened to her answer.

“Huh? Oh! I meant the promotions at previous jobs, not here. Smaller less organized paranormal investigator stuff. I think the main reason I got the job here was my work at Four Corners. They're mostly professional and have worked with SHUSH before,” Gemini explained as she then started to walk off the elevator. She made sure she had a good grip on the box she brought before she stepped off, “Thanks again!”

“Four Corners? Hmm. You’re welcome. Good day.” Kevion let go of the button. He swiveled his ears at the sound of a familiar voice further down the hall animatedly discussing a topic that should be of interest to the paranormal agent. The elevator closed and he was off to his own floor, putting the matter out of mind for now.

((OOC: Kevion’s contribution is done for now, unless we need a victim/assistant. Lol. Carol will return in my next response. I can ease her back out of the rp and bring in Lexi instead if you want. I’m totally flexible. Come on in, Paranormal Agents and Elliot! smile))

                      • Elliot Hudson
                        Elliot Hudson

Upon exiting the elevator, Gemini would be greeted by the sound of an English-accented voice coming from an office down the hall, making claims of paranormal activity in his flat.  If she followed the voice, she'd find where she needed to be -- the office of Agents Trevor Mallard and Dimitri Vondran.

And in that office, the owner of that voice -- a fiery-haired drake dressed in a pilot uniform -- was clearly frustrated as he tried to make his case.

"Why else would I be hearing weird sounds and music at night?  And keep finding things in random places?  My living room chair was in my kitchen when I got home last night... the kitchen!  How does that even happen when I live alone??  It has to be a ghost or something!  It's been going on for weeks now, and no one else will believe me!"

                        • Agent Gemini
                          Agent Gemini

Gemini’s interest was peaked at what she overheard nearby. Looking at the area around her it did look like where she needed to go was in that same direction. The new Agent felt she wasn’t /technically/ eavesdropping if that was supposed to be there.

She followed the voice towards that office. As Gemini walked she shifted the box from carrying it with both hands in front of her to just under her left arm and the weight resting on her hip.

Agent Gemini put on a smile and stepped into the doorway of the office. She made sure she was turned in the direction of who be behind the desk, “Heyyy, sorry to interrupt. I know I'm probably way early to report in today but sounds like you may already need help with something? I’m Gemini by the way.”

She gave a glance at Elliot a moment, not really meaning to be rude butting in while he had been talking. She looked back to who was probably the person in charge.

                          • Trevor Mallard
                            Trevor Mallard

"Until we rule out other things, we can't say for sure it's anything paranormal." Trevor replied while he took notes as he listened to Elliot. He looked up when the agent walked in. "Hello, I'll be with you a moment." He smiled.

"You're the new agent being assigned to this department?" His partner, Dimitri, who was a vampire stood up to greet her. But when he neared her, he felt a little odd. "Oh." He rubbed his head. "Pardon me. I feel a little off today."

"Are you feeling alright?" Trevor had noted his partner seemed to be a little under the weather.

"I'm fine. I might need to snack soon." Dimitri shrugged. "Anyways, our office is a little small so there's an office next to ours that you will be assigned to. You'll be sharing it with another new agent that was assigned to us."

Trevor glanced at the box. "Why don't you take her to the office and get her things settled in while I finish up here? Then we can look over the files."

Dimitri motioned for her to follow as he brushed past her. "Come with me."

                            • Agent Carol Torres
                              Agent Carol Torres

The elevator dinged again as Carol made good on her promise to check back in with the new agent.

She saw Dimitri and Gemini leave the office and waved, picking up her pace to join them.

“Ah you found the right place! Great. My apologies: I must have been in LaLa land. I don’t normally forget to mention important details like what floor to get off on.”  She shook her head at herself.

She briefly glanced at Dimitri and did a double take. “Do you need me to fetch you a snack or a coffee, Agent Von Dran?”  While it was not unusual to find the vampire looking sleepy from getting off his normal schedule, it was odd to see him looking so...drained?  Did he transform multiple times overnight?

                              • Agent Gemini
                                Agent Gemini

Gemini showed concern that one of her new bosses seemed under the weather.  To her, Dimitri didn't seem too concerned and she didn't want to bring it up since the other boss already did.

The new agent perked parked at hearing about getting her own office. Sharing it with even with one person she was still was excited about it. She would have shared that previous jobs had her in just an open area of desks or even no real official desks at all.Gemini smiled when she heard Carol.

“Oh it’s okay! Someone else let me know the right floor. I guess I'm just getting moved in right now,” Gemini then heard Carol’s concern for Dimitri as well. She directed what she said to him, “I can take it from here if you need to go. I'll let you know when I'm done setting up. Uh- if having an office mate means their an assigned partner we'd have to discuss that later…”

There was a strange feeling coming from somewhere. It was something not the average person could pick up. While it wasn’t coming off as a threat at the same time a heavy weight hung in the air.

                                • Elliot Hudson
                                  Elliot Hudson

Elliot gave Gemini a quick but polite smile and nod in greeting as she entered, but then turned his attention back to Trevor. He was normally quick to try to make friends with new agents, but he was currently too up in arms about Trevor questioning his 'ghost' situation.

"What other things are there to rule out?" he demanded. "I've already told you there were no signs of a break in.  And no one else but the landlord has the key to my flat!"

As he awaited a response, he gave the new agent another polite nod as she left with Dimitri. He made a mental note to properly introduce himself later.  But, for now, he was determined to make sure he was taken seriously for once.

((OOC: Apologies for the slow response!  Got held up by internet issues and a cold.))

                                  • Trevor Mallard
                                    Trevor Mallard

"The sounds and music can be the neighbors or the building itself. You could have moved stuff and not remember doing it. The landlord could have inspected the place at some point. That's why we need to rule out everything else before we determine if it's paranormal. Most cases turn out to not be paranormal at all." Trevor replied.

He reached into the filing cabinet to pull out an empty folder so he could start making a file.

"If there is anything going on, do you have another place to stay?"

"I'll be alright after I've had a snack." Dimitri smiled although it looked toothy because of his fangs. "We did have a lot of work yesterday so I might still be worn out from that."

But still. It was strange feeling a heavy weight in the air. And it only seemed to get heavier as they walked to the office.

He stopped at a door to open it to the office she would be working in. Inside was two desks and enough filing cabinets to store all of their work in. The walls where empty and there was no windows but the lights were bright enough to make it not so deary.

"Pick whatever desk you like. And feel free to personalize this office so it doesn't get boring to look at the blank walls." The vampire chuckled. "We're working on getting some computers up here. So when we have them sent up, you'll get the login info for the wi-fi and SHUSH's network so you can access things you'll need. "

Dimitri looked at his watch. "Once you're done setting up, come back to my office and I'll show you were the break room is since we'll be having lunch soon."

And then he turned to leave. As he headed back to his own office, the heavy feeling lessen a bit.

((OCC: Eek! Sorry. I didn't realize it was my turn!))

                                    • Agent Carol Torres
                                      Agent Carol Torres

Carol watched Dimitri with concern, but he seemed alright when he left the office. She sighed quietly and turned her attention back to Gemini.

“I took the liberty of bringing the most frequently used forms along to get you started. You can pick where you want to place your inbox and outbox. I suggest keeping two filing cabinets reserved strictly for in progress cases and unfinished files, just in case you need a place to dump the files on your desk if there’s another flood, building uprooting, invasion, or super villain power activation, or drill. Is there anythiing else I can help you with, Agent? Do you know how to work with a Xerox machine?”

The collie did not notice anything off about the air in the office, but her keen eye and nose did notice something else. She went over to pick up a pen that was sitting on top of one of the filing cabinets. Literally sitting upright on its cap.

“I did not see that when I first walked in here. Huh. Surprised the janitor didn’t pick it up. Maybe he was trying to amuse himself last night and he forgot to take his pen with him.”  She shrugged it off. Maybe she had simply overlooked it before or she’d been standing in the wrong angle to see it?

Before she could take her leave, she spotted something else out of place. One of the forms she’d set down for Gemini was now under the opposite desk. Perhaps it had caught a draft and drifted over there? Carol did not hear the AC or feel any breezes. Maybe her tail knocked it off when she turned to face Gemini. Carol set the file back where it belonged.

                                        Agent Gemini

Gemini listened as Dimitri spoke. She acknowledge the things she was told with the occasional ‘okay’ and a nod with a smile. Like the average millennial paranormal agent she seemed more concerned about not having wi-fi yet and not concerned at all that one of her bosses was clearly a vampire.

Once Dimitri finished, Gemini spoke still sounding eager on her first day, “Thank you! I will be quick and be ready before lunch for sure. Thanks again. I hope you feel better!”

The new agent turned her attention to Carol, “Oh thank you! I'm sure I'll need it. I like to keep up on paperwork. Helps me brainstorm. And I'm sure I can figure out the copy machine...”

She tilted her head and looked rather curious when Carol noticed the pen. She hadn't really noticed it either while talking to Dimitri and then Carol. Then followed by the sheet of paper, Gemini raised an eyebrow.

“Is there something off? Do you know who else has been here today?”  Gemini asked as she walked around the office to check for anything else, “Wasn’t that other agent complaining about hauntings at his home?”

                                        • Elliot Hudson
                                          Elliot Hudson

The young agent looked a bit miffed about Trevor still being skeptical, even though that was part of his job. No sense on wasting resources on a case that could be explained by simple absent-mindedness or, as was more likely in Agent Hudson's case, drunkenness.

But Elliot hated the slow-moving process of interviewing, preferring to just jump right into action. But due to the nature of the case, Trevor was the one in charge, and he wouldn't take him seriously if he didn't cooperate. So, with an annoyed sigh, the pilot fell back into the chair, crossing his arms.

"The landlord leaves a notice at the door and sends texts to tenants to warn them anytime he or maintenance or anyone else will need to enter the apartment," he explained, looking annoyed. "I received no such text or notice. I already got him to show me the security footage, and there were no break-ins. And there is no way I could move a chair that heavy all the way into the bloody kitchen on my own. Drunk or sober," he added, knowing full well that they probably would question his sobriety at the time. "At least, not without pulling a muscle, or damaging something else in the apartment."

See? Contrary to popular belief, I can be reasonable.

                                          "As for the music..."

Elliot looked a little uncomfortable for a moment before shaking himself out of it.

"I've... I've never heard a sound from my neighbours the entire time I've lived there," he explained uneasily.  "So unless they've suddenly developed a compulsion to play the same song on repeat over and over at exactly 11:48 every night..."

                                          • Trevor Mallard
                                            Trevor Mallard

"After I get a few things done here, I'll drop by your apartment and have a look." Trevor said as he finished with his notes and stuffed them into the folder. "If there is something going on, I would suggest finding a place to stay until the problem is dealt with." He looked up as Dimitri returned. "You're looking better already."

Dimitri reentered their office and went to sit on the edge of his desk. "There's something odd about the air today. Is the lab experimenting again? After I left Gemini in her office, that heavy feeling I had disappeared."

                                            "I don't think so."

The vampire seemed puzzled as he frowned. "Something is going on and it made me feel strange."

“Not that I know of,” Carol shrugged in reply to Gemini. “I can check the janitor’s records to see when he was last here. You’ll have to ask Agent Hudson for clarification if you would like to hear his story. I was paying too much attention to you and Agent Von Dran to overhear him.”

                                              • Agent Gemini
                                                Agent Gemini

“I'd like to see those records if possible. Is there is cameras anywhere?  Ah, I guess I should ask my new bosses if they've put any kind of magic protections over the offices,” Gemini said as she unpacked her box on her desk. There was some basics like a pen cup of pens and a stapler. There was a few knick knacks including some carved rocks and a jar of  potpourri. She also had a few spiral notebooks and a few leather bound ones, “Do you think it would be okay to ask Agent Hudson now? I don't want to be rude.”

                                                • Elliot Hudson
                                                  Elliot Hudson

“A place to..?”  Elliot scowled in annoyance and shook his head.  “Ghosts or no ghosts, I’m not going anywhere.  It’s my home, not theirs!”

Besides, he didn’t have anywhere else to go, if he wanted to.  His only real option was to pester Agent Wolfe, who (unfortunately) resided just a few doors down from him.  But he knew very well his supervisor wouldn’t believe a bit of this “ghost nonsense.”  And Elliot would sooner sleep on the streets than room with him even for a night, anyway.

He sighed and stood.  “Any time frame in mind?  I’d like to make sure I’m home when you come by.”  So much for his nightly bar run.

Once that was worked out, Elliot took his leave and headed mback towards his department, passing by Gemini’s office on the way and giving her and Carol a friendly (though slightly distracted) wave as he walked on by.  A moment later, however, he’d be back in her office.  He’d overheard his name being mentioned, but it had taken a moment to register in his distracted mind.

“Yes?  I’m Agent Hudson.  Was there something you needed?”

The drake’s attention was now fully on Gemini, and he regarded her with a friendly, albeit curious and slightly surprised, expression.

He hadn’t yet introduced himself, had he?  It wasn’t often that new agents learned who he was so quickly... at least, not unless they were being forewarned by others about the young pilot’s “obstinate and reckless” disposition.  But Carol was one of the very few nicer agents that didn’t seem to feel obligated to do such a thing.  At least, he didn’t think she did...

                                                  • Agent Carol Torres
                                                    Agent Carol Torres

The collie agent started to respond but she perked her ears and smiled. “I believe the answer to your last question is coming. Hello, Agent Hudson. Agent Gemini would like to ask you a few questions. Agent Gemini, in answer to your previous question, there aren’t any cameras in individual offices. The only one on this floor is by the stairwell. I can ask Mr. Edwards about his cleaning records for you. Have a good day!”

Dipping her head politeky, Carol took her leave to let the two ducks talk in peace. Still concerned about Dimitri, she went to check in with him first after she sent a text to the armadillo janitor about his cleaning records for this floor.

“Agent Von Dran? Are you alright? Do you need me to bring you anything?” Comfortable enough with the vampire duck’s personality, the motherly collie reached out slowly and lightly pressed her hand to his forehead to check for a temperature change, gazing into his red eyes to look for dilation.

                                                    • Agent Gemini
                                                      Agent Gemini

“Thank you so much for your help!” Gemini replied to Carol as she left. She then turned her attention to Elliot. She grabbed a pen from her pen cup and a spiral notebook, “I just overheard a bit of your haunting issues when I was moving in here. From what I heard doesn’t sound like anything aggressive? Just kinda like having a roommate that's doing there own thing, but a little annoying?

“I guess I shouldn't pry if the head agents are going to help you with it…. Sorry if I'm prying! I just wanted to help if you needed it. I'm  Gemini by the way, though Carol introduced me,” she held out her free hand for a hand shake while the other still held the notebook and pen.
