SHUSH Ambush

Of course while the stargazing villain usually wasn't one for actual plans and preferred to go with whatever craving she had at the time- a craving of mostly fuel filled frenzy- she was surprised she hadn't thought of infiltrating SHUSH's headquarters sooner.

It made sense- building one's own weapons took supplies, resources, and most of all, time. Darkwing had destroyed countless equipment of hers, hours of wasted efforts stripped away in a moment. Why go through all the trouble when there were perfectly good state of the art weapons of mass destruction hiding within the center of St. Canard like a prized jewel?

SHUSH was just stockpiling them, keeping them out of the hands of crazed criminals who would without a second thought strike the city down into a pile of ash.

If you asked her, they were the crazy ones. They should've dismantled those things as soon as they landed into their hands, not hoarded them away like loot just begging to be stolen.

Her plan consisted of two steps thus far.

Step one, get inside the hornet's nest and poke around in it until literally every SHUSH agent came out to greet her, all with guns pressed to her head.

Step two, destroy the facility and make off with a prize and not die in the process.

Right.

Jacob found himself back in the SHUSH lab instead of filing a report, which was so often the case even in his younger years as an agent.  Keeping up with the technology and tweaking things with the in-house scientists kept up his interest much more than IC-27D's ever could.  He was certain he'd have Gryzzlikoff breathing down his neck before too long, but thankfully the SHUSH director was his best friend.  Or, at least, they were close.  Or had been...

A fifteen-year gap in a friendship could make things a bit awkward.  But Jacob still liked to think that at the very least he and John were still friends.

"What have you got for me today, Dr. Octave?" he inquired, coming up behind her.  He was almost certain she was too absorbed in her work again to hear him, but he at least tried.

        Right on point.

The absent-minded scientist was humming to herself as she worked on... something. Whatever it was. There was nothing right in front of her. What was she doing with those tweezers?

It wasn't until she'd received a hard tap to the shoulder (or any part of the body, really) did she turn around. Her eyes were covered in the weirdest goggles and... were those googly eyes taped around them? She backed directly against the table with a bump before she remembered to lift up her eyewear.

"Oh. Bonjour, Agent... Duck?" she smiled and held out her hand. What? That was close enough. "I was giving my latest eenvention a test run. Zese things!!"

        Again, nothing.

"I'm using microscopic goggles. 'Ere," she offered him one. Once he slipped them on, he'd be able to see the colourful miniature bots in the petri dish on the table. Nanobots. No... they looked and acted different...

"I call them boteria!" she said cheerfully. "So far they've been building their own community. Sort of like ants!"

Sure enough, clumps of dust bunnies were forming the tiniest houses in the world.

"I tried eenteracting with them but they are very docile. I moved them apart but they keep going back together. I think they could be used to fight diseases and stuff. Or 'elp with studies. Or just be a friend! As long as they don't destroy ze world, zat ees," she shrugged with a carefree grin.

The door to the lab door opened, and J. Gander Hooter stepped in with two cups of coffee. He blinked when he noticed Jacob.

"Oh. Hello, Jacob. I did not notice you were here. I would have gotten you coffee too."

"Bonjour," he replied back to her with a smile.  She never remembered his name and was probably the only woman he'd ever met to do so.

"Ah, fascinating.  I see you've worked out the - er - bugs," he said as he studied them intently through the lenses.

He slid the goggles off and set them aside, then grinned with his friend entered the lab.  "Don't worry about it, John.  You've got your hands full, anyway."  He was probably the only agent on staff who could get away with calling J. Gander by his first name.

"I'd ask if it was a busy day, but since you're here I can tell you're free.  Have you thought more about my request to upgrade my clearance?"

Of course, blasting her way in, as fun as it would be, wouldn't get her very far. She imagined strolling in and demanding that they hand over top secret weapons wouldn't yield any results. She might as well just walk in already handcuffed for their convenience.

This would take a slightly subdued approach, and normally she wasn't one for subtly, but a situation like this required it. She'd have to settle for the more ridiculous tactics- a disguise.

She felt oddly...naked without her usual suit and helmet to hide behind. But nobody had really ever gotten a good luck at her face before, and nobody knew who she was, or had been rather. There was nothing to tie her back to an identity that had long since been considered dead. She was just a Jane Doe. It was almost liberating in a way, to think she could be anyone, and maybe, if she were in a saner state of mind, she might have decided to be a decent person.

...Or she'd just waltz into the front door of SHUSH and approach the nearest elevator as casual as any person might do who had no plans on being arrested.

              Yay, coffee!

Thanking the director gratefully, Phaedra took the coffee he offered and took a break to drink. Without him, she'd likely work until she passed out.

"As a matter of fact, I have," he told Jacob. He was never known for neglecting any request from his agents. Whether it was a yes or no, they could always count on him giving him an answer. "And I am certain we could get the paperwork done by tomorrow. But, Jacob..." she looked up at the older mallard seriously. "You haven't given me a reason why yet."

"Do I need one?" he grinned boyishly.  Then he said seriously, "You'll recall the man responsible for my disappearance.  It seems my current clearance does not extend beyond the St. Canard and Duckburg locations.  I'm hoping to be able to have access to more databases.  I was so close to getting him when I arrived back here, but he's managed to go underground again, and I need every avenue explored.  With discretion, you understand, which is why I don't want SHUSH actually involved."

A passing agent nodded toward Red Nova, then paused curiously and turned back.  "Are you new?  I haven't seen you around here before.  If you're lost, I can help point you in the right direction!"  She smiled sweetly.

Nova looked over at the friendly face, plastering an even smile onto her own. She was dressed casually, and only looked out of place due to the unprofessional red Condor sneakers, accompanied by a searching gaze. She played into it.

"Yeah actually, I'm searching for the laboratory...I was told to meet with...oh geez, what was his name? It was an older gentleman...I really don't want to be late, he'll probably fire me. It's my first day." Of course she knew no one here, but hoped the other agent might take the bait and fill in the blanks for her.

Hooter looked solemn and he nodded, but that frown slipped into his features once more.

"I will get your clearance upgraded by tomorrow. I still don't understand a lot of things, but I trust you. I have not kept the board informed and I still won't. But... are you certain there is nothing else I can do to assist you? You don't have to do this alone," he told Jacob gently.

"Do you have a badge yet?" the woman asked, then seemed to wave it off mentally.  "Well, there are a lot of older gentleman here, but if it's the lab you're after, that's on level L, straight that way and to the left.  You'll have to use the comm to be let in if you don't have your badge yet."

She gave Red a small wave.  "Good luck!"

                      ***

Jacob glanced surreptitiously toward Phaedra, only now seeming to remember her presence.  "I appreciate that, old friend, but there's not much to be done until he's found."  He paused then, deciding to change the subject.  "Have you seen the improvements Dr. Octave has made to her - ah - boteria?"

"Oh, right! Thanks! I appreciate the help." Nova gave her a wave in return before turning back down towards the hall, grinning. This was surprisingly easy so far. Maybe too easy. Still, she took a mental note on the layout. Nothing worse than forgetting a way out if one was in a bind.

She turned left as per the directions from the helpful agent and headed towards the appropriate hall. Cameras stationed every few feet, of course, and those were just the ones she could see.

The laboratory was just ahead, one had to go through security clearance to pass into the level, so she stepped up, hitting a button on the communication module.

"Hello there, I'm new here and I was told by one of your agents that I had to be in the laboratory. I'm running late, could you let me in please?"

No danger of eavesdropping, if Jacob was worried about that. Phaedra seemed completely lost in her own world, staring off into space and humming a nursery rhyme from her childhood.

Hooter nodded understandingly, although worry still creased his forehead. Then he smiled when Jacob mentioned Phaedra's latest project.

"Ah, yes, I've been wondering when she'd name them too," he chuckled. "I was here a few hours ago. They're fascinating."

He wanted to say more, but the intercom got his attention. Odd... he didn't remember hiring anymore scientists. There were enough around for Dr Bellum and Phaedra to torment as is.

"You may be in the wrong place, miss," he responded as he made his way to the electronic doors. "Stay there and I'll go get you." You would not like coming in here, trust me. "Also, can you state your name and ID, please?"

"My name? It's Celeste Túle. As for ID, I don't have my badge, one of your agents told me to come here to be let in. She was really nice.  I'm sorry if I'm late, I'm not normally so disorganized..." At least she had made it this far, and hopefully they'd let her in long enough to poke her nose around and see the goods worth grabbing.

Frowning, Jacob moved toward the small monitor near the door and peered at the person on the other side.  "She'd have at least a visitor's badge, surely?" he asked John.

And who would just tell some random person to head into the lab?  They needed to revisit security training, it would seem.  "Did you hire a new scientist?"  Judging by the marks on her face, maybe she was used to the errant explosion or two.  "Surely she would still have orientation...perhaps she's blowing it off - can't say I blame her.  Remember when you and I skipped out that one day and Pondrains nearly had an aneurysm?"

Then he chuckled at the memory. "We certainly didn't need that orientation after all."

"Just a moment, Miss Túle!" he called to her as he pulled out his phone. "I just want to check something."

Maybe they sent him an email and he did not see it...

And perhaps it was time for 'Celeste' to bail?

Oh geez. This was going over brilliantly. One of her better 'plans', pose as a normal citizen who's never committed a single crime in all of her life, and THAT'S what gets her into trouble. Civil pleasantries were never much her style, why start now?

His tone didn't sound very promising anyway.

"Oh sure, check away. 'Course I could just save you the trouble and open the door for you." She might not have been armed to the teeth, but she always had a little something special tucked away for any problems she might encounter, and this seemed like it was going to be. "If you think I ought to be somewhere else, maybe we should discuss this face to face, I don't like conversations through doors."

Jacob's nonchalant expression soured at her thinly veiled threat.  He reached over and called security on the landline.  "These doors are reinforced, Miss Tule," he said in a dangerously even tone.  "If you did indeed forget your badge, this can all be smoothed over with the security office.  If you're here for an ulterior motive, however, these doors will remain closed...for your safety as much as ours."

But the doors did open. And it wasn't by Hooter or Jacob.

Still lost in her own world, Phaedra had walked over and, quicker than anyone could react, she used her ID card to open the lab doors, wanting to go out for more coffee. Hooter pulled her back instinctively but the damage was done.

"Wow, SHUSH sure has an interesting method of keeping people guessing. And here I thought you were just going to leave me out there all by my lonesome, and then you would've had a nasty hole through your wall. I don't know what budget's like around here, but nobody likes fixing things, do they? So." Her eyes flitted between the trio. "As I was saying out there, I don't like conversations through doors. May we continue now?"

"What do you want?" the agent asked evenly, stalling until security arrived.  "You're clearly not a 'trainee,' how did you get inside?"

Hooter was just as tense and wary. "If you've hurt any of my agents..."

And furthermore, I am insulted at your automatic assumption, as if I'm some rampaging monster." Nova looked towards J. Gander, "I haven't hurt anyone, and I won't, so long as you just hand over one of your pretty weapons. Could be one you're not using, a little old, a little hit or miss. Agent Connor took Red Nova by her shoulder as he ran in, with another agent who was armed with a gun. "Miss, I'm going to have to ask you to leave." He looked calm and friendly but he was freaking out inside. And it wasn't because of the woman.

You could get rid of some really nasty people around this city. But you don't. I'd be willing to perform a service for you though. I know you must be acquainted with a certain terror that flaps in the night. Why does he get a free pass to run around chasing criminals with weapons, and I'm escorted out for being polite."
