Goosey, Gooesy, Gosalyn?

It was random chance at it’s finest.

There Mother Goose was, just minding her own business, when out of nowhere she’d spied her most hated enemy skipping down the street without a care in the world. The clothes were different, sure, but she’d know that red hair anywhere! Before any nosy do-gooder could see, she nabbed the girl and stuffed her into a sack, poofing them to her current hideout, Mammoth Studios Wardrobe Warehouse. It wasn’t a very fairytale location, but between all the props and gowns, it suited her needs just fine.

Mother Goose giggled gleefully, dragging the sack into the middle of the room. Little girls were a lot heavier than they looked, apparently. “I bet you thought you’d seen the last of me! Oooooh, all the things I’ve got planned for you, Little Miss Troublemaker-“ she cackled, head spinning with all the nasty possibilities, upturning the sack full of squirming duckling onto the floor.

Blink-blink.

“…You’re not Gosalyn."

Gosalyn had no idea what was going on. She had been on the way to the library as she had volunteered to read a book for the preschoolers, and the next thing she knew, she was dumped into a sack.

Why does this sort of thing always happen to her? Perhaps dad was right when he said she should carry her pocketknife around...

She looked at the villain curiously. Then her face brightened into a smile. "Hello! I don't believe we've met! I'm Gosalyn! You seem very nice!"

She soon noticed where, exactly, she was in.

"Oh my, this is amazing! Is that a fairy costume?" she skipped over to take a closer look, her little tuft of a tail wagging in excitement. "That gown looks beautiful! And look at that! So shiny! And that dress looks like the soft waves of the sea! Why have I never seen this place before?"

Maybe she wasn't, you know, traditionally threatening-looking, but Mother Goose felt a little insulted that the duckling didn't seem to be taking her seriously. She had kidnapped her! Right off the street! Granted, she seemed to have kidnapped the wrong child, but-

"You're not Gosalyn!" she repeated. Unless it was opposite day... Was it opposite day? The goose peered intently at the supposed 'Gosalyn'. The real Gosalyn would never wear a dress, would she? Or that much pink...

"What?! You've never seen Tinkerbell? Cinderella? The Little Mermaid?" Mother Goose asked, with genuine alarm. The poor deprived dear! "How can you not have seen any Mammoth Pictures? This is Where Dreams Come True," Mother Goose exclaimed, quoting the studio's famous motto.

Gosalyn put her hands on her hips. "I am Gosalyn!"

What, did she capture her and take her to this place just to tell her she wasn't Gosalyn? She didn't complain, though. Those costumes are amazing!

"What's Tinkerbell? Or Cinderella? Ooh, I know mermaids! Neptunia is one!"

She tilted her head to the side. "I don't recognise those names, I'm sorry."

"You don't-" she repeated faintly, sitting down heavily on a crate of dresses. Was every version of Gosalyn made to torment her?!

"Well, you've at read these fairytales, right?" Mother Goose coaxed. Books were better anyway. This Gosalyn- she'd worry over the fact there seemed to be more than one Gos later- looked more bookish than her rowdy double.

"No, but I was about to," Gosalyn said. Zipping down her pink little bag, she pulled out a thick fairytale book. "The library was doing a program to encourage little kids to read. I volunteered for a storytelling session, and I didn't read it yet so later I could enjoy it with them!"

She started admiring the gowns again. They were really pretty! Who made these? They must be tremendously talented!

"So, what's your name?" she smiled at her cheerfully. "Are you a good witch?"

Well, her clothing did seem to suggest that.

"Oh thank goodness," Mother Goose sighed in relief, hand over her heart. That was a close one! "What an adorable thing to do! Reading is extremely important, you know." Maybe she was too hasty in her judgement, this was clearly the best version of Gosalyn. So sweet and kind and sharing, a perfect little lady.

"You can call me... Mother Goose!" It might have been a dramatic and scary answer, if she had thunderclaps and lightening backing her instead of a light flutter of magic sparkle dust. The dresses were probably more frightening.

"Teehee, well, I suppose that depends on what you call... good~" the witch grinned.

"I know! I love reading so much! My favourite story is The Brave Fluffy Bunny!" Gosalyn's eyes sparkled. "Did you know where I come from, a lot of books don't exist? It's really a shame..."

She wanted to read the book now that she had it, but wasn't it rude to do it in company? She sighed and put it away.

"Mother Goose? What an interesting name!" she said, then tilted her head to the side. "What's... a mother?"

Oh dear Lord, please save and bless this child.

"That's one of my favourites too!" she gasped in delight until the rest of the sentence caught up with her brain. A place without books?! She unthinkingly scooped the girl up to cuddle protectively against the cruel, literature-deprived world.

                    Me. I'm your mother now
                    .

"Well, a mother is someone who loves you and cares for you and reads you stories," the goose said, hugging the fluffy duckling like an oversized teddybear. "And- gets you pretty dresses and toys and anything you want... I bet we could find you a dress here~"

"Oh..." Gosalyn nodded, looking thoughtful. Either she was used to being scooped up, or she did not mind it at all. She then looked up at Mother Goose once more out of her emerald green eyes. "Are you going to be my mother?"

Realising how silly that question was, she quickly looked down, blushing. "I mean, it's okay if you aren't. You're such a nice lady and I'm just a normal, boring kid. You'd probably want someone special. My, that dress looks exquisite! Let's go try that on!"

Gosalyn used 'Change The Subject'! Was it effective?

"Of course I'll be your mother!" Perhaps more like a fairy godmother than a normal, day-to-day mother, but the principle was probably the same... Affection. Presents. Walkies.

"You are the cutest little girl~" Mother Goose beamed, spinning her new "daughter" around to make her smile. "Yes, lets~!" Anything that didn't fit she could probably fix with magic.

Gosalyn giggled as she was spun around, and gave Mother Goose a hug. "Thank you," she said happily.

She had a new mother now! She couldn't wait until she told her dad!

No, Gos! Don't tell your dad!

And don't tell her about him either!!

"May I try on this gown, please?" she asked, pulling out a pink, frilly dress she had her eye on. It looked too big for her, but it could still be fun to try on!

"Of course, pudding pie~" Mother Goose chuckled, releasing her new baby to run off and play in the ruffles and frills. Already taking after her mama... it did a heart proud.

"Just pick out anything you like! Ooh, and we can pick up accessories to go with it~" she added. A diamond tiara to start, and some pearls, and a silver bracelet, why nothing was too good for her little angel. "Nothing like a bit of sparkle, right munchkin?"

Gosalyn soon had the dress on, and twirled around gracefully, even though it was much too big for her.

"I say, this is quite a splendid dress, my dear lady. Those sparkles would be smashing on it, whatever the amount," she said in a posh voice, then broke down into giggles again.

"I'd love to try those! The more sparkles the better! Will you do the honours?" she asked, bowing her head a little.

"Oh yes, my little lamb, you look absolutely adorable~!" Mother Goose giggled, waving her wand over the child to shrink the dress to fit. It was indeed a very sparkly spell, although they wore off as the girl twirled.

"Hmm, lets see what I have~" she said, opening up boxes. All were filled to the brim with fantastic treasures, from shining jewels to silver goblets. The goose had to hand it to the studio, their gold coins really did look real... which made it all the easier to hide a few pieces of real jewelry in the props.

"Oh, pooh!" Mother Goose pouted, holding up priceless rubies and looking at Gos in her finery. "Red on pink? They'll clash horribly!" She shook her head. "We'll just have to go out and get more then~! Won't that be a fun bonding activity?"

"Whoa," Gosalyn exclaimed when her dress suddenly shrunk to fit her. "Thank you!" she smiled up at her... new mother fairy godmother.

She took a peek at the jewels. "Oh, they're all so pretty! Are they real? Who do they belong to?"

Mother Goose's remark hurt her. Her hair was red too. Did it really clash that badly with pink dresses? But she liked pink a lot and she never wanted to change her hair colour.

She patted her hair self consciously and followed her out, trying to put on a smile. "Yes, I guess so. Uh, where will we be going?"

"Real as the beak on your face~" Mother Goose said, bopping Gosalyn and ignoring the question of ownership. "But they simply aren't good enough for my little girl, so we're just going to pop down to the store and get you ones that match your beautiful green eyes~"

She stopped walking abruptly. "Oooooor... we could fly down," she said, looking back at the duckling. "You ever been on a broomstick before, sweetmeat?"

She'd never been to a jewellery store before. The idea of it fascinated her. She couldn't wait to see what they had!

"Mustn't forgot, safety first!" she said, popping a pink bike helmet over Gos's pigtails. And then added kneepads. And elbowpads. And gripping gloves.

"There! That should do it!" Mother Goose said proudly, grabbing her broom from her purse. "Now hold on tight," she said, putting Gos in front of her, making sure the child had a good grip on the wood. "Once we get up high, I'll even let you steer~"

"They're so pretty! Thank you!" she said to Mother Goose happily.

She squeed at the promise. "I'd love to steer! I promise I will be very careful!"

How would they fly, though? Would the broom spin like a helicopter? Or would the back of the broom spew fire? Or would it grow wings and flap them? She made sure to grip on tightly before they took off.

"Can't let my little sugarplum get bruised now can I~?" The witch chuckled affectionately. Sadly, the broom was not as cool as Gosalyn imagined it and merely hovered once Mother Goose kicked up, with no sparks trailing behind or wings popping out as they steadily rose in the sky.

"Now flying is very easy," Mother Goose said over the breeze. "You just pull sideways to go left or right-" She demonstrated, sending them on an easy side-winding trial through the clouds, like a skier on a slope. "Pull UP for height!" They shot upwards with reckless speed. "-and point Down for landing!" she shouted, plunging them into a heartstopping dive.

The witch cackled as she just barely missed the ground, skimming her feet on the grass before pulling upwards into an elaborate loopdeeloop that got them back into cruising altitude.

"Now you try~" she said, letting go of the broom.

Gosalyn laughed and cheered as Mother Goose literally took them for a ride, not minding at all the danger and risk of falling. She kept her instructions in mind as she took over the wheel- er, broom.

"Ooh, let's see..." she said, staring at the broom intently. Was she scared? Is she going to chicken out?

Then the broom shot off at break-neck speed, doing a few loop-de-loops and sharp turns, going upside down once before it righted itself.

"That was so much fun!" she cheered. "Your broom is amazing, mom! Let's do that again!"
