The Spy Who Shoved Me [Open RP]

OOC: I don't really have a lot planned for this one other than a general idea.  All are welcome!  This will be mostly set at SHUSH, just FYI.  I may throw Jacob in later, but this will mostly be about Lolita.

She brushed her long silken black hair over her suited shoulder, her serious green eyes studying the diminutive director before her.  She hadn't met John Gander Hooter at the SHUSH Academy, but they had attended in the same years.  Different departments, so they never really crossed paths despite having a common connection.  One that Lolita would rather forget.

After a long vetting process, she had been reinstated as a SHUSH agent, her specialty in deciphering coded messages and enemy communications.  She spoke five languages, but it was apparent from her thick Russian accent that that was her primary language.  53 now, she was still a chiseled beauty despite the small lines marring her gray-feathered face.

"Director Hooter," she said smoothly in her cold, even voice, "I have come for my departmental appointment, sir."  She straightened, her black stilettos giving her already tall frame an imposing height.

"Ah yes," Hooter nodded and gestured to several files on his desk. "I've chosen several fields that should be of interest to you. Or do you already have a department in mind?" he asked as he poured out a cup of tea for her.

He was rather casual and friendly. Who knew a director of SHUSH could act like that?

        And were those crumpets?

((OOC: Sure Max, once I have this scene with J. Gander to establish things.  Does Max work within SHUSH or have a relationship with SHUSH?))

Lolita's stiff posture didn't waver.  She glanced at the tea.  Not having been given a choice, she felt she had to please her superior and she took up the tea and saucer mechanically and sipped.  There was no expression on her beautiful face.

"I prefer communications," she stated evenly.  "You will find my background and most of my recent work has been in that area.  I am quite good at what I do.  Sir."

[OOC: Max has a relationship with S.H.U.S.H and they are responsible for making his Red Knight costume. Perhaps this could take place at the time when he's in the midst of testing the costume out still or maybe he drops by to get some repairs done or something?]

              ((OOC: Repairs is fine. ))

Whether or not she had accepted the tea would not have bothered Hooter at all. But he had forgotten most agents, especially ones who'd never met him, did not want to risk any chance of causing his ire.

"Ah, I thought you'd want to be back in your department."

He slid the topmost file across to Lolita. "And I certainly did notice. It's good to have you back at SHUSH. This file contains all the recent information and changes to the communications department, and names of the agents you'll be working with."

"And, as with every other agent in this agency, my door is always open if you need help, or if you just want to chat."

That wasn't just open friendliness. There was sincerity in it too, of a director who genuinely wants to see his agents happy.

Lolita put the tea down and took up the file without looking at it.  She straightened and gave the director a stiff nod.  "Thank you, sir.  I appreciate this opportunity.  I assume I may also review the laboratory for any advances in translation technology services and surveillance devices?"

                  J. Gander Hooter

"Certainly," Hooter nodded. "You may ask for Dr. Bellum or Dr. Octave. They both will be willing to show you around the lab."

Lolita nodded in acknowledgment, then left the director's office to head in the direction of her new office.  The communications department was one floor above the laboratory, so it didn't take her long to find it, meet her new team and superior, then head down toward the lab.

She swiped her newly minted badge and moved inside, straightening her dark blue suit before moving toward the nearest agent in a lab coat she saw.

"Pardon me," she said in her deep voice.  "Could you tell me where I will find Doctors Bellum or Octave?"

The lab agent nearly jumped. Then he greeted Lolita back politely.

"Oh, Dr. Bellum is currently out. But you'll find Dr. Octave in the robotics area," he pointed in the direction of the area. "She's the one with the dirty blond curls. But... you may find difficulty getting her attention."

Dr. Phaedra Octave would be found working on a strange contraption, making sure all the wiring was in the right places. She was extremely absorbed in her work and it would take more than a call or a tap to get her to even look up.

                        DarkwingPsycho

Of course, Lolita was confident in her own abilities and did not take the lab worker at his word.  Instead, her heels clicked smartly across the lab as she moved toward said blonde.

She cleared her throat.  "Dr. Octave, I presume?"

When she got no response or even a hint of acknowledgement, she repeated the name a bit louder.  Again met with no indication she had been heard, she moved closer to the scientist and put her hand on the tool she was using to fiddle with the device she was working on.  Her fingers gave the tool a tug toward her to indicate she wanted the good doctor's attention.

That literally made Phaedra jump into the air. She pushed away a lock of hair and looked up in surprise. "What ees eet?" she asked in a clear French accent. "Eef zis ees about ze portal I 'ave not gotten eet stabilised yet."

Lolita blinked, her train of thought momentarily derailed at this statement.  "Portal?" she responded, bewildered.  "What portal?  I am here to speak with you about translation and surveillance devices."

Now it was Phaedra's turn to blink.

                              "Translation? Surveillence? Uh..."

Her eyes seemed to glaze over before refocusing.

"Oh! Right, right, over 'ere!" she beckoned her over to a large lab table. "Which ones do you want to see first? There's zis tiny bug we've been working on zat allows us to keep tabs on someone, record sounds and voices, and take clear videos and pictures! There are other types we're working on."

She was gesturing to an... empty petri dish? Then she moved over to the computer to hold out a pair of headphones with wires and small devices clumped on it.

"Zis one... ees still a work een progress. But once we're finished, eet will break ze language barrier for good! Well eef you're on a computer anyway. For now," she grinned.

And then she started rattling off about the items she would have to acquire for that project and their expenses and other... science stuff only a scientist on her level would understand.

Lolita let Phaedra ramble while she looked over the items she had already pointed out.  She plucked up the bug and studied it curiously.  Then she looked over the headset, raising a brow.  It seemed...too conspicuous for her liking.

"What about earlier versions of translation devices?" she inquired.  "Dr. Waddlemeyer had a number of prototypes twenty years ago that would suit my purposes.  Where do you house such things?"

"But... those only translate twenty languages."

How preposterous! There should be a thousand at least!

She sighed and checked her notepad, then pulled out a key, unlocking a cabinet. She stepped up on a stool and dug around for a minute before pulling it out.

"Ah. There eet ees!" she announced, handing it over. "You know, I really admire Waddlemeyer. Zat man ees a genius! I wonder eef 'is kid 'as ze same talent. I mean, not zat eet would be bad eef she doesn't. Do you know 'ow to use ze device?"

"Yes..." Lolita said slowly as she took the old invention.  "He was a great scientist."  She was quiet for a moment, then added, "It has been a long while since I have used such a thing.  Perhaps you or someone in your department might be willing to refresh me, yes?"

"No problem!" and Phaedra was back to smiling happily.

She helped Lolita attach the inconspicuous device to her side, then fitted the earpiece into place.

"Ze device will listen to any foriegn language and translate eet within... well, eet depends on ze length," she explained. "Allow me. Tu es ravissante."

The device worked almost immediately, speaking clearly into her earpiece. "You look lovely."

Meanwhile outside of the labs came the sound of footsteps and judging by patterns, they were slow. Almost as if they were dragging themselves a little. The door then opened and there stood Max with his R.K costume in his hands all scratched up and dented. Max looked to be slightly injured as well, but it wasn't anything fatal. Just a couple of scratches and # marks on his head "Hey uh...Professor...Do you have a moment? My armour is in need of some repairs...I got into a pretty rough fight and I'm generally surprised this armour saved me." Upon closer examination at the armour, the armour was covered in black smoke. "I uh...Got caught in a explosion let's just say..."

Lolita smiled ever so slightly at Phaedra, although her eyes showed no emotion.  "Merci, docteur," she replied, as the device said loyally, "Thank you, doctor" in her earpiece.

"How much range is there on this device?  And will it work with the bug you showed me earlier?"

At the sound of the doors opening and a new voice, the Russian woman turned slightly to regard the newcomer with little interest.

                                              Phaedra giggled and curtsied clumsily.

"Oh, within ze range of your hearing," she explained almost immediately. Then she thought it over for a moment before nodding. "Well, as long as eet's spoken words, eet'll work with anything."

She barely noticed Max entering as she handed the controls for the bug to Lolita, a slim, video game-like controller that had a clear screen in the middle.

"Sara suggested designing eet zis way to make ze controls easier," she shrugged. "Zis switch turns eet on. Oh, err... what did you need these for again?"

She wasn't sure if she had been told that already or if she'd forgotten.

Lolita glanced impassively at the fox and his armor.  "Well," she said, "it looks like another agent is in need of your services.  I am grateful for your time, Dr. Octave."

She pocketed the bug, and her green eyes looked with curiosity around the rest of the lab.
