Trader Sam's Tiki Bar

After an arduous week at SHUSH Central, combined with plumbing issues at their condominium and some damage to their vehicle, Alex and Sophie were more than ready to enjoy a well-earned night out on the town.  This time they would be accompanied by some familiar faces (even though one of their friends' faces was often disguised behind a mask).  The streets were snarled with late night weekend traffic as usual, but it made arriving at their destination that much more rewarding.  Sophie parked her i8 along the side of the avenue and quickly fixed her make up while Alex checked to see that his smart phone still had a good charge and dialed up the volume in case if a SHUSH emergency would require their attention.

The couple exited the car and scurried to the other side of the wide avenue during a break in the hectic traffic.  Sophie decided to wear a pair of salmon jeans and a loose black and white striped shirt with a salmon colored scarf.  Alex was still wearing his mint colored dress shirt from work with the sleeves rolled up but had replaced his slacks and dress shoes for a pair of jeans and tennis shoes.  Sorry, no scarf.  They briskly walked down the wide tree-lined sidewalk for a few blocks.  They could hear the seagulls crying and smell the salt water from Audubon Bay.  Combined with the summer heat and ruby evening sky, the St. Canard waterfront felt like a tropical paradise.  The ambiance was soon amplified as they reached their destination.  Trader Sam's Tiki Bar was right along the harbor mixed in with numerous other services and attractions.  The bar and restaurant displayed an exotic Polynesian theme both on the outside and inside.  Guests were first treated to the sight of a small waterfall and pond lined with volcanic rock and subtropical plants with seating cut into the rock at the entrance.  A shallow wooden pergola extended from the building facade and carried on into the foyer.

The interior was just as captivating.  Tropical planters and aquarium displays studded the interior.  The first floor was wide and accommodated a large dining area, a bar along the side wall, a dance floor, and an elevated stage where four men were playing Hawaiian music.  The bar was decorated with bamboo and displayed an array of lit shelves of drinks and decorative glasses.  A large staircase further on led up to a small second level that skirted along two of the building's walls and overlooked the dance floor and stage.  The support beams that held the second floor aloft looked like coconut trees and were decorated with sea shell sconces.  The lofty ceiling held to the tropical theme by appearing to look like a thatched bamboo roof with hidden lighting illuminating the false roof with an array of red, orange, and azure hues.  A vast array of floor to ceiling windows along the side wall opened out to a view of the bay and an outdoor seating area lined with tiki torches and crowned with a pagoda dripping with ivy.

Alex and Sophie walked over to the bar and ordered drinks.  Sophie went with her default pina colada while Alex settled with a Cuban libre.  Can't have a tropical paradise without rum!  They spotted a moderately sized table near the dance floor along the same wall as the bar.  Ever the gentleman, Alex seated Sophie and then sat down himself.  Both ducks applauded as the band finished playing a song.  Soon, they would be joined with friends.

A blue and yellow parrot named Juan greeted them at the bar when they ordered the drinks. He set about making them seemly almost putting on a show himself as he mixed the drinks with amazing skill.

The band was just about to start playing another number again when they were interrupted by a certain masked hero who decided he needed to make a grand entrance as blue smoke filled the room. Customers turned their heads to look at the commotion coming from the bar's entrance.

"I am the terror that flaps in the night! I am the hangover after a night's drinking! I am Darkwing Duck!"

Some people wondered if a villain was currently in their midst or if Darkwing had already started drinking before arriving. Talk about ego and attention grabbing.

Sophie and Alex traded a quick glance at each other.  A glance that shared so many mutual thoughts.  Mostly embarrassment and astonishment.  But, Darkwing Duck was their friend and ally and deserved respect.  Pardon a smirk and giggle here and there.

"I told you Darkwing likes to make dramatic entrances."  Alex leaned in toward Sophie.  "They had to retool the smoke detectors in my building because his entrances used to set them off all the time."

"At least the smoke matches his costume."  Sophie almost seemed to be just as flattered as she was secretively embarrassed.

Both of them smiled, Alex rather sheepishly, and waved at the crime fighter motioning him over to their table.  This was going to be an interesting night.  More so than they could have ever expected.

Not too far away from the costumed crime fighter was his equally recognizable sidekick. Who was currently entertaining himself by making fish-lips at the fish in the nearest aquarium. He was still miming them when he looked up to see why Darkwing was announcing himself to the crowd. Noticing Alex's waving, he brightened and cheerfully waved back.

A few heads turned to see who Darkwing's sidekick was acknowledging, but Launchpad was already on his way over to greet his friends.
"Hiya Alex, Sophie. It's great to see you again." He offered to shake hands as he seated himself.

Alex and Sophie once more exchanged embarrassed glances and tried to contain their cheerful laughter.  Who cared what people thought of their friends and themselves.  This was the weekend, and everyone needed to relax and have some fun.  Once Launchpad, pilot extraordinaire, had reached the table the group shook hands.  Sophie reached out first while Alex took a few extra seconds to regain his composer and last few strands of self confidence.

"Hello, Launchpad!" She chirped.  "I'm so glad you were able to come out tonight!  Our last few meetings were too short.  Now we all have a chance to get to know each other better and have some fun."

"That's right."  Alex concurred while reaching out to shake the large pilot's hand.  "And what better place to relax and enjoy ourselves than here?"  With all of these people staring at us like we're weirdos.  Come on Alex.  Snap out of it!  These people are good friends.  Who cares what anyone else thinks?  They have no idea how hard these guys work or how selfless they are... well, LP anyway.  Darkwing is still an outstanding guy despite the whole ego thing.

"Tough crowd." Darkwing snorted when all he got was odd looks. He groaned a little when he caught his sidekick making faces at the fish. He followed the pilot when he went over to meet the two agents.

"Interesting place you picked out." He says as he took a seat. It was typically a place he wouldn't normally go. At least not alone. But that's where they decided they would meet up. Plus, he heard all about the hype of the refreshments served here. A cockatoo waitress with a colorful crest came up and took his order for a drink.  He ordered a rum cocktail dubbed "The Painkiller". Considering the week he's had it seemed fitting.

Darkwing leaned back while waiting for the drink. "So I take it you met my sidekick then? At least that's what Launchpad has been telling me."

Sophie was about to explain the reason for choosing this locale for a meet up when Alex suddenly began to answer Darkwing's second question.  Partially in an attempt to get his mind off of the crime fighters' entrance and in an attempt to show that the four could have a normal pleasant conversation with fewer embarrassing moments.  Really, Alex?  You should know better.

"Yes we have!  Mr. McQuack and I first met in a break room at SHUSH Central and later in the SHUSH parking garage when we were working on his GPS.  And, he and Sophie apparently met each other in the SHUSH lobby just after I had gone down to the analysis department."  Having regained his composure, he casually looked around the room to see if anyone was listening in.  He didn't dare twist around but instead used his glass as a mirror to look around him.  As an occasional field agent, one had to be discrete and vigilant at all times.  Thankfully, the crowd had lost interest in the two new guests and had reverted back to the buzz of conversation and laughter.

"Yep. I was initially there to deliver office supplies. Boy, the break room sure gets crowded at lunch time. Hehe. This is a nice change of pace," Launchpad ogled the interior design some more. "Looks one of Mr. McDee's tourist resorts. I saw this really neat fish in that aquarium over there. He was as big as my fist, with bright blue and black body. He was kinda shy though. I was wondering if he came from Neptunia's part of the ocean."

At least Launchpad's eccentric behavior had an explanation this time. He ordered a pineapple cooler for now.

Sophie took a quick sip of her drink and smiled that it had warmed her stomach up.  "Yes, that's right.  Launchpad was telling me all about his adventures and responsibilities as a sidekick."  She paused and turned to face the pilot.  "And, Junior Woodchuck leader and pilot and delivery man."  She grinned.  Their first encounter was still engrained in her memory, and she still chuckled at when he introduced himself to her.

"Director Hooter speaks highly of both of you.  I'm glad that St. Canard has two dedicated and talented crime fighters to protect the world.  It must be a pleasant change for the both of you to relax like this."  Flattery?  Maybe.  But, she meant those words.  Alex also expressed the same sympathy.

"Don't get me wrong, but hopefully this meet up isn't dragging you away from anything important."  Alex said.  Hopefully not.  I still can't believe I'm hanging out with one of the Flying McQuacks and the legendary Darkwing Duck.  Yeah.  Who cares about embarrassment?  These guys are heroes in my book.

"I was a Junior Woodchuck as a kid. But that was ages ago. " Darkwing says. After saying that he suddenly felt old. In fact, he had the feeling he was the oldest one in the group. Well, good job you idiot. Made yourself look like a senior citizen. He sank a little in his seat.

Where is that drink any how? He needed it.

"Eh I come from a family of heroes." After hearing that statement about being a dedicated and talented crime fighter. That seemed much better to him. Stroking the ego again.

Launchpad grinned back, pleased that Sophie had remembered all of his job titles. He blushed bashfully at the praise but his ego was well sated.
"Nah. We're not tied up with anything right now. It's actually been pretty quiet out on the streets, all things considered. DW here only busted two robbers tonight. We'll call it a night before it gets to be daylight."

Launchpad glanced at his pal to make sure Darkwing was alright before answering Alex's question.
"Neptunia is a sentient being who lives in the ocean. I think she told us she was an ordinary guppy who was transformed into a mutant by a barrel of toxic waste that was dumped in the water? Anyway, she talks to all of the sea creatures and directs them to help her clean up the seafloor. She flooded the city once to teach litterbugs a lesson, but we convinced her that not all people are bad."

[We meaning me and Gos, but I'm not about to remind DW that he messed up with Neptunia by fighting her with force and breaking her seashell.]

Launchpad glanced at Darkwing again to gauge his mood before finishing his summary.

"Anyway, when the Fearsome Five teamed up the first time, Neptunia helped combat Liquidator and rescue some of the people that the Liquidator sank when the boats capsized and the bridge broke. She joined DW, Gizmoduck, and a couple of other good guys to help combat the Fearsome Five. And the Justice Ducks saved the day!"

Launchpad was clearly proud of Darkwing and the Justice Ducks' accomplishments.

Aww.  Sophie smiled when Darkwing Duck sank into his seat.  No need to feel ashamed Darkwing.  "I have no doubt that you do come from a line of heroes.  You must have rare talents that are passed down in order to do what you do.  Your family must be proud of your accomplishments then if they are heroes as well."  Sophie beamed.  Perhaps that would cheer him up?

Intrigued by the topic of Neptunia and fish, she turned her attention to Launchpad's narrative of past encounters with Neptunia and the formation of the Justice Ducks.  "How wonderful!  Alex and I have both heard stories of a group of crime fighters uniting to defeat the Fearsome Five, but we didn't know who was involved.  I'm relieved to know that she was able to put the Liquidator in his place and help you and Darkwing."  Especially since the Liquidator scares the daylights out of me more than any other supervillian.

Sophie turned back to Darkwing.  "It seems like you have two families of heroes you belong to!  That must feel so encouraging."

And Lanuchpad wasn't helping with the hero's ego. Darkwing grinned proudly as he listened to the part about how he and the Justice Ducks' had stopped the Fearsome Five from destroying the city.

Even though it annoyed him that he had to share the glory. Especially with Gizmoduck. The goody two shoe from Duckburg irritated him to no end. Even worse was that he was more popular than him. The nerve of that guy coming into his territory! Darkwing was so jealous and bitter enough about it that he would paint a line and tell Gizmoduck to stay on his side of the bridge or else.

The two agents only saw the positive things about him. They have yet to experience Darkwing's negatives.

"I could tell you all sorts of war stories but then we would be here all night." He took a drink of the Painkiller when they had finally been served. "Hmm.." He licked his bill after the sip. The drink was more tasty than he had thought.

But his heart had sank at the mention of family and if they were proud or not though. "I suppose so. " He mutters.

Psssh!  I find it hard to believe that your that old Darkwing.  You're in better shape than most people my age...

Alex sat and listened intently at another one of Launchpad's stories.  What a dangerous profession he and Darkwing Duck have.  But, I suppose it only makes sense for a stunt pilot and a person who gets called into SHUSH by J. Gander Hooter himself.  Alex eyed Sophie briefly at the mention of the Liquidator.  He knew all about her phobia of water, and the Liquidator had given her plenty of nightmares.  Maybe it was the rum kicking in, but she seemed to stay calm at the mention of the villain.

Alex agreed with Sophie.  "Yeah.  Having your own band of superheroes must come in real handy."

"It does come in handy, knowing who to call when things get weird." Launchpad chuckled.
Well, weirder than normal. Let's not open that can of squiggly worms, shall we?

"Mm. This drink sure is tasty. I bet the food is, too. Hehe. Have you two been here before?" He asked Sophie and Alex.

Sophie sympathetically gazed at Darkwing when he responded to her encouraging words.  She was honestly surprised at his solemn response.  Perhaps she had assumed too much?  Whatever it was she brought up, it must have hit a sensitive chord to so suddenly alter his normally proud and flamboyant demeanor.  If the setting was more secluded, and if they were better acquainted, she would have asked what was the matter.  But, not now.  Tonight should be full of cheer and laughter and pleasant memories.

Switching to a brighter topic.  "Yes we have!  We just discovered it about a month ago.  Alex and I have been exploring different places to eat and have fun.  One day, we were both in the mood for seafood and felt like dancing and looked through some travel books and found this place."  Speaking of which I'm going to take another long sip of this wonderful pina colada.  Yum!

While Sophie blissfully indulged in her drink, Alex picked up the conversation.  "If you like seafood with a tropical flare, this is the place!  Their coconut shrimp and orange glazed mahi mahi is terrific.  That's what we ordered the first time.  They also have pretty good oysters on the half shell.  They even have shark fin soup!"  Now there's something you don't get to have every day.  Even in a large cosmopolitan city like St. Canard.  Oh no, you got Alex talking about food.

Suddenly, an idea popped into his head.  "Hey, why don't we order some appetizers?  I'm buying."  Careful with the generosity there, Alex.  SHUSH pays well but not that well.

His mood seemed to lighten a little.

He was rather hungry now after smelling all of the various scents of food that was being cooked and served to other customers. His stomach was growling at him to fill it. They hadn't had anything to eat all night. At least they would get a better meal out of this little meeting than the soggy fries and greasy hamburgers from the Hamburger Hippo.

Suddenly, the mention of sharks and Darkwing caught her off guard.  "Darkwing, you should be careful!"  She exclaimed.  One more reason to never visit the beach.

He'd noticed Sophie's eyes widening when he admitted to eating in his jet, but it couldn't be helped. He had a fast metabolism, and he often had to fly for hours without a break when he flew for Scrooge McDuck. Those cross oceanic flights were major energy zappers. Flying for Darkwing meant less air time, but he still had to stay alert in case DW needed backup, or someone to fetch a doctor or haul collared crooks to jail.

"Sharks stay away from shallow water usually, so the beaches are still safe." He tried to put Sophie at ease. Boy, he sure had a talent for annoying and upsetting people sometimes. Now would be a good time to see the menus

"That's good to know."  She said feigning relief.  In all honesty, she was still terrified of the beach or anywhere where there was more than one foot of standing water.  But, that's another story.

As the night would go on, Sophie would drift in and out of contemplating why Launchpad would eat in his jet and come to the realization that he had to sometimes fly for long hours with no stopping and that the luxury of cleanliness was just that.  A luxury.  Sometimes you just have to eat.  Yeah.  Maybe Alex does deserve an apology.  Later.  For now, she was happy that everyone was enjoying their drinks and company.  But, hunger was beginning to set in.

"Heh, I've heard of taking a bite out of crime but not taking a bite out of crime fighters."  Alex tried to lighten up the mood again but realized that his flattery was not that flattering.  Plan B.

Alex waved over one of the waitresses and kindly asked for an appetizer menu.  A few seconds later, the waitress had returned with the said menu and handed it to Alex who then placed it on the table for everyone to browse.  "Go right ahead and look through the menu."  He told everyone around the table.  "Don't worry.  Order anything you want.  We can share whatever we order, and I promise I'll help eat anything anyone gets."  Alex didn't bother ordering anything figuring that everyone else would order off the menu.
