We're all expanding

For Darryl and the Von Drankes.

Freelancing was all very well. You were your own boss, and in St. Canard a builder was never hurting for jobs. And you could eat at work. Again, being your own boss.

So why do anything else, when he was set up so well?

If you're wondering that, you have no idea of anything. Don't you KNOW the Von Drake labs are expanding to St. Canard? DON'T you?

Darryl was more than a little excited about that, and so he decided it would do no harm to take a chance. Running his hand through his hair to fix it (which made it worse), he adjusted his glasses, held his resume like a shield, and walked in to look for someone.

This laboratory was a recent acquisition so there weren't any nameless scientists running around the laboratory just yet. In fact, that's the reason they were now hiring. You can't advance technology without a couple of mooks to sacrifice... err... help out. So, instead of being in the laboratory destroying dimension stability, Frankie von Drake found herself doing clerical work at the front desk.

The gentle 'ding dong' of the entrance called for her attention and she looked up to find one of Von Drake Labs' first victim. He was wearing a red shirt too! That would quickly get him out of the way if he turned out to be a complete noob.

Frankie stacked her papers neatly on her desk and gave Darryl a professional smile. For a moment there, she felt a sharp sting of deja vu.

"Welcome to Von Drake Laboratories." Frankie greeted, "What can I help you wi---ah screw it, I see your resume in your hand. Hand it over."

"Oh thank God, that's all I came prepared for." Oh damn it Darryl. They don't know you YET you could have tried to make a professional impression.

The drake handed the resume over with exaggerated care, just to carry the 'I prepared for this' joke, and then took the chance to glance around while she was looking it over. The place had a weirdly, but nicely, familiar feel. He took to labs like the obvious simile.

        "Place is pretty massive."

"Yeah, you kind of need the room in case all hell breaks loose." Frankie responded as she read through Darryl's resume. She shrugs, throws it into her cabinet, and takes out that particular, complex device equivalent of a Swiss Army Knife. With it, she snaps a picture of Darryl and out comes a complete ID Badge with an unflattering, surprised shot of the new mook.

"Alright, 'ere ya go." Frankie handed it to him, "All I need now is your finger print, press it on that blank space on your ID that says 'Finger Print'. You know, in case you wind up dismembered beyond recognition."

She sits back down, "Lab opens at five in the morning. Lab hours end at six in the afternoon. Just report to the Professor when you come in to get your duties for the day. Lunch break is at ten and then again at four. Benefits are through McDuck Insurance so don't count on them too much."

That was fast. They were clearly hurting for new blood. Pressing his finger to the space, he clipped on the badge. "Do the benefits benefit us or McDuck insurance?"

Well it was a valid question.

A much more valid question was related to the lunch breaks. "There going to be a cafeteria or something in this huge space or...?"

A less valid question swiftly followed. "Also can I see that? I won't take it apart." Today.

"Very, very valid question. McDuck is not going to pay for anything unless you're literally dying, but with our lab records, don't you worry, we give plenty of opportunities to use up your premium." Frankie responded, despite her joking manner... that was a very real thing.

"As for the cafeteria, we're also a pizzeria so if you want to count that as a cafeteria, be my guest." She continued, "And I will most likely shove my foot in your shin than let you touch my personal gadgets."

She kept her smile all throughout and finally extended her hand in greeting.

"Franziska von Drake, your new boss." She introduced herself.

The hand was readily taken for a friendly shake. "Darryl Finnegan, your new redshirt it looks like." I'm even dressed for the occasion. I just didn't realise it would be that appropriate.

"... a pizzeria? Like... edible... pizza? You're joking right?"

Technically she would still be telling the truth if it was inedible machine-pizza, but...

Frankie chuckled at the reference he made, unknowingly securing his position she had already given him when he entered the building.

"Well, I hope you're more like Chekov and wind up being a staple character despite your shirt." She answered. She holds up the pizza box that had once held her lunch from earlier in the day, "And yep, Von Drake Labs Pizza. Where we make your pizza from the atoms up. It pays the lab's bills. Science is more of a financial sinkhole than its own business... especially where you do more research than product."

She tosses the box aside and gets up from her seat, going around the desk to his side. Without the help from her office chair, she was a tiny thing hard to keep eye contact with.

"C'mon, let's give you a tour and a position," She said, "What do you specialize in?"

                    Can't I have pizza first?

Manfully restraining himself from asking that, which unfortunately took all his concentration so he couldn't spend any on not looking surprised at his boss's height, he nodded and made ready to follow her around. At a slow pace so as not to overtake her.

"Building. I'm not so good at the paper and pencil planning but I'm pretty good at not getting blown up while I'm making on the fly adjustments."

Frankie pretended not to have noticed that reaction and preferred to focus on leading him down the main corridor.

"Good, Prof. von Drake is gonna love that." Frankie turns to him, walking backwards, and points to her weak little arms, "He likes spewing out new designs and I can't keep up with the making and the moving. He'll love at least one more guy to help with that."

"We mostly make and install our patented Von Drake security systems," She began to explain, "Then the pizza delivery is another venture, as you know now. Though it's all to support the lab's research and development. We're more interested in advancing the field of science than capitalism to tell you the truth. But, bills. Do you have a car?"

"A small one. Why, do you need to take it apart?" he quipped as he looked around. "The Von Drake systems are supposed to be really heavy duty, right? Serious stuff."

Just like everything patented Von Drake. Complicated and slightly crazy.

                        "Getting any business?"

"Just one client so far. Some Amazon giant looking to protect some trash warehouse from spooky things. Still gotta finish that consultation." Frankie said, "We also already have quite a bit of places wired up through McDuck Incorporated."

She leads them down to the main lab where upon opening the door, Prof. Ludwig von Drake made himself known with a loud and hearty, "Vhy, hallo dere!"

                          DING.

The oven rang and the Professor threw open his space-age looking thing to bring out a pizza. He tosses that into a box and hands it to Frankie.

"203 Main Street." The professor said. Frankie turns immediately and gives the box to Darryl.

"This is why I asked about that car." She grins up to him

                            He grinned down at her.

"If I pay for this now, can I eat it and tell the customer I was mugged?"

To show he wasn't really serious, he pulled out a pen and jotted down the address on his hand. "I'll get right on that boss. Do I have a time limit?"

                            Fifteen minutes or less?

"Get it there under thirty minutes and you're fine." Frankie said.

"Ja, don't vorry about it." Ludwig smiled to his new hire, "Vhen you come back ve can fit your car vit' a quantum engine so time could be da least of your problems!"

"Although trans-dimensional directions can be a bitch." Frankie adds, "Now, on with you, don't make me fire you already."

You're too cute to be fired.

But if you haven't hired anyone else yet who do you call to throw me out?

... well, I think I'm going to like this place.

With a mock salute, Darryl grasped the box with both hands and hurried out and towards his car, all excitement. He got the job!

... he'd have to ask Canna if he was okay running the freelance work on his own.

Hey maybe Canna could apply here.

                                Not harm in asking. Later.

                                PIZZA.

And he didn't even crash the car on his way there or back. Promising, right?

"Hey, look, you can do the literal minimum of your job." Frankie congratulated Darryl when he returned from the delivery, "Now you can get a proper introduction with your boss's boss."

Ludwig lifted the welding mask he was wearing and turned off the torch. Frankie had been as equally suited.

"Frankie told me all about your resume!"

                                  "At least the relevant parts..."

"Impressive! Almost an overqualified lackey! It's a pleasure to haf you on board vit da labs! I'm Ludwig von Drake... Darryl Finnegan, was it? Grab a torch und help us finish up dis kooky t'ing."

"We're hoping to build a microverse battery!" Frankie grinned.

                                  "Von dat doesn't implode."

"A microverse battery?" he asked in curiosity as he looked around for a spare welding mask to go with his new torch. "So is that a battery FOR a microverse or FROM a microverse?"
