If I fits, I can knicks!

There was something simply alluring about a jewelry store at night.. the glass displays, the soft lighting reflecting and sparkling off the shiny, polished surfaces of gem stones. The creamy color of satiny pearls hanging delicately off the faux, felt neck displays. Best yet, the glowing aura of gold… for some reason the soft lighting in post-working-hour jewelry stores gave gold a heaven-like glow. It was enough to give the kleptomaniac duckette shivers of pure delight.

Jade knew what to expect once she got into the McDuck Jewelry Store. The trick was getting <i>in. Naturally she was not so brass as to break a window and go through a grab-n-dash type heist… no. She wanted to be able to savor the experience, so she picked more… subtle entries.

Flattened against the cold surface of an air vent, Jade’s moving was slow at best. For two reasons… One, the vent was only big enough to allow her to fit. There was no room to crawl, so she had to propel herself by placing her palms on the floor of the vent in front of her and using her upper body strength to pull herself. Not too friendly on her front side, but she had endured worse for much less.

Two, McDuck was a name she was familiar with, and a name that big had security to back it up. There was bound to be some kind of noise detector on site, and until she could find the wiring, she had to be absolutely silent.

So it would only be natural that at that very moment, a tickle in her hair indicated trouble. The thing about dark, semi-warm vents is that all manner of dust and critter made it’s way there. Jade idly brushed at the tickle, figuring that it was simply her hair catching on a seal and needed to be loosened. She was just about to start moving again when that same sensation returned…

And moved….

“GRAH!” she hissed, and jerked, spazmatically shaking her head. She was blessed with seeing a small, black, eight legged friend fall and scuttle away.

Panting heavily and frozen in place for a moment, the wide eyed girl glared after her nemesis… Several minutes passed before she was able to calm herself back down and continue about her way. Hopefully she hadn’t made too much noise.

Meanwhile at a Laboratory downtown, the little beeps and boops of a Mustachioed Plumber committing mass murder across a fungi themed dreamland were the only things ringing in the middle of the night. Frankie von Drake, an avid gamer and terrible nightwatch, was intensively trying to find the whistle to the secret world. She nearly missed the red alert signal that began to flash behind her.

"Aw, shoot..." She snorted in disappointment as her little plumber met his deadly fate in a pool fool of lava. She was about to restart the game when the flashing behind her reflected off her black death screen. She turns around and her heart nearly drops when that light was flashing right underneath the label that read: MCDUCK JEWELRY #23.

The Princess would have to wait! With all caution thrown into the air, Frankie grabbed her keys and jacket before darting out of the lab. She hopped right onto her little electric scooter, equipped with its pizza carrier and 'VON DRAKE LABS PIZZA' logo, and sped her way toward the jewelry store.

Typically, one would call the police. Typically, the triggered alarm would alert the police, but that would require sanity. Instead, this particular system at the McDuck Jewelry Store was equipped to trigger early and alert its creators before authorities could get involved. It's pretty hard to study vulnerabilities when the area became a crime scene after all.

Frankie arrives almost instantly. She opens up a complex device that begins to print out the details of the security breach. She unlocks the jewelry store after remotely shutting off the pre-alarm system from her device, and enters. Her details pointed her towards a particular vent and she began to stack herself up a little make-shift ladder to meet the perpetrator face to face.

Mind you, the idea that this perpetrator could potentially be armed and dangerous never crossed her mind. She was simply ready to yell 'HOW' as soon as they showed their face.

Completely unaware of the terror that awaited her, Jade crept along like a slug.

Just keep thinking about diamonds… shimmering with those lovely rainbow colors… clear as water… Dreamy little sigh, happy smile…

        Alright, lets do this!

Jade came up to a grate, wiggling around to pull out a multi-tool and work at removing the screws. Quiet and slow going but effective.

She hooked her fingers onto the cover, and once loosened, she backed up to pull it inward, rather than letting it drop down to the floor below.

Yes… now for those sparklies… She reached for the edge and pulled herself towards the exit.

Waiting impatiently like a mother waiting for her troublesome daughter to arrive home after curfew, Frankie tapped her little high-top clad foot as she looked attentively toward the vent. When the face of said troublesome daughter poked out from the removed vent covering, the little duckette pointed an accusatory finger towards it.

          "How!?" She belted out.

You would think her priorities would be everything else but finding out how and why a crook was rummaging through the air filtering system.

“SONOVVA—“ Jade jerked back at the accusatory digit and yell. She hit her head against the top of the vent in her shock, her hand shooting up to rub at a quickly forming bump.

“Ah… ‘How’ what? ” through clenched teeth, but still a smile because what she saw was a child sized person. “… it’s awful late for a kid to be out… and this store is closed.” Um… hey… pot meet, kettle here.

            A blink.

            Wait… no alarm?

            • The Von Drakes
              The Von Drakes

This tiny flash of anger swept across her eyes and Frankie snorted at the common misconception. She placed her hands at her hips and kept a glare towards the infiltrator.

"First of all, I'm no kid. I'm a college-aged adult!" Frankie corrected her, "Secondly, I work for this store and that explains why I'm here. You, on the other hand, have no explanation that isn't criminal. . . so unless you want me to get authorities involved, tell me what vulnerability you exploited in the alarm system."

From her little square hole in the wall, Jade’s expression went from proper shame at her mistake in the woman’s age, to tense understanding, then finally… defeat.

                …. Well… she had a point. Sigh… goodbye sparklies…

“The service lane…” she said, jerking her head towards the side of the building she had discovered the fault in. “Delivery lanes always have too much traffic for motion or sound detection. They’d be going off every time a stray cat walked by. Then there was an external vent that was high up, and had no access… As you can tell…” she spread her hands as far as possible. “Your average sized person would not fit.”

So really… it was just a bunch of dumb coincidences. “But I am guessing I ended up triggering something anyway since you are here.”

                  The Von Drakes

"Yeah, the vents have a weight censor to detect things that aren't supposed to be in there." Frankie admitted. She held out a hand to help the intruder out of the vent, "Usually a spider or larger dust triggers it so it's only worked to trigger my company... that's how seriously we take security around here. Anyhow, thanks for letting me know. C'mon, lets get you out of there and you can go back to burglarizing something that doesn't belong to Scrooge McDuck. You wouldn't want to steal from him. He'll try to send you to the penitentiary if you accidentally took a friggin' pen of his."

She hops from the stack of boxes and removes a few so her guest can fit comfortable out of the vent.

“Oh… thank you.” she said, accepting the helping hand. A bit of a shock that she was being so nice about a thief breaking in.

Once she was out far enough, she propped her hands on the top and bottom of the exit and twisted her torso around so that her legs slid smoothly out, allowing her to drop down gently. As she dusted herself off, she gave a sad look around at the displays…

But she was lucky she was not going to jail (she assumed), so best not to push it.

“What company do you work for?” Jade asked, pulling a stray cobweb out of her hair. Someone really should go clean those vents.

"Von Drake, Industries." Frankie beamed proudly, "And we're under contract with McDuck Inc. You know, nepotism and all."

She put the boxes back in their place and went back to the thief.

"So, if you could do me a favor, don't steal from places with Von Drake security." Frankie began to escort her out through the front door, She stops suddenly as a little idea lights up in her head, "But if you could stop by and expose any vulnerabilities without stealing anything.... I can pay you commission. You seem to be good at what you do and I can respect that."

                      • Piper/ Jade
                        Piper/ Jade

“Oh…” Well… not much of an initial response. Familiar with McDuck, yes, not-so-much anyone else. But they clearly knew their business… she had not been able to get anything. There was respect, and upon the woman’s initial request she moved to agree.

The follow up statement gave her pause. Was that the same as working with the enemy? Did that make her some sort of security snitch?

Standing just by the door, Jade tapped her finger to her chin lightly… All things considered, it sounded a lot better than constantly getting pinched by Von Drake Industries… kind of like how software companies hire hackers to test their security.

But if word got out somehow…

                        But… pay

“Can… we keep it on the down low?” she asked, fidgeting slightly.

"Who am I going to tell?" Frankie raised a brow, "It's not like it's good rep for me anyway. You got nothing to worry about. I'll probably just tell my boss so he knows where checks are going."

Once they were out, Frankie locks the door and brings out her device again. In a single click, the entire jewelry store was in immediate lock down. That should keep the service lane closed until she can take a look at it tomorrow.

"Speaking of checks..." Frankie began. She presses a button in her device the screen displays an electronic check, "Who do I make this out to? How's five hundred bucks sound? Believe you me, that's worth more than the blood diamonds my uncle has in that store."

“Who do you…?” Jade stammered, then made a face. The face. One of someone who simply could not bring herself to give away her identity. “Well… you see…um…”

Because come on.. she wore a mask for a reason…

She rubbed the back of her neck, clearly flustered at her inability to answer that question. She had a bank account, but it was tied to her real name… and she had never thought to open up a secondary with a fake alias. She normally worked in cash-only.

A shrug. She was getting off right now, and that was worth it to her. “I will have to set something up. Did not expect a situation like this to ever happen.”

                            • The Von Drakes
                              The Von Drakes

"Ah, I get it. Secret identity and all. What with the mask." Frankie nodded, "Alright, then, you figure that out. Get yourself a Swedish bank or a fake LLC company and once you do, feel free to contact me for your payment."

Frankie dug out a card from her pocket. It read 'Von Drake Laboratories, Franziska von Drake, Assistant Director.' and her phone number.

"You're alright, by the way." Frankie then smiled to her approval, "You didn't resort to violence or threats and haven't tried to make a run for it yet. I appreciate that. You're one of those crooks with a heart of gold, right? That's grand. Is there anything I can call you at least? As you read, I'm Frankie von Drake, so pleased to meetcha."

                                Piper/ Jade

Taking the card, she spent a moment reading it before turning it over in her hand and slipping it into one of her pouches. “I have found that violence and threats just lead to… more violence and threats…” she shrugged. She would not admit just yet that she was quite possibly the biggest wimp when it came to actually having to hurt people.

“And you are pretty okay too.” she added with a mirrored smile of approval. “You could have just handed me over to the cops. And…” another proper look of shame, “I am sorry about assuming you were a kid. That was beyond rude.”

To her final question, “I go by Jade.” Unoriginal, sure. There were probably about a thousand heroes and villains with the same name, but she did not care. “And it is a pleasure to meet you, Frankie von Drake.”

"Don't sweat it!" Frankie chuckled, waving her hand to dismiss the uncalled for shame, "I'm short even for my type of duck. I'm used to people thinking I'm a kid."

The fact that she wore neon washed clothes didn't help either. In fact, her entire unkempt look attributed to the child misconception.

"Jade! You'll be one of the few colors I can see." The scientist joked. She went to her scooter and hopped on, "So, Jade, do you need a lift? Or do you not want to disclose your secret lair either? Either way, I promise I'm not gonna drop you off at the cops still. I think the promise of scientific advancement is far more interesting than one more crook in the pen. I don't agree with jail anyway. Americans are so inefficient, you know. Rehabilitation is where it's at. But then again, that doesn't line their capitalist pig pockets with money."

Says the girl working for Scrooge McDuck.

                                    Snort.

                                    Lair.

                                    Right.

She had to sneak back into the shelter since it was well past curfew, which meant more stealth. “Thank you all the same, but I will pass on the ride.” She glanced at the writing on the scooter, softly saying it aloud in a confused voice… Well, whatever. To each their own, and the smaller duck was clearly on a roll. No need to interrupt with a question about pizza.

When it was clear Frankie was finished speaking, “I am afraid I am horribly biased on that particular topic. You know, being a criminal and all…” A grin. “In any event, I still appreciate everything. I will be sure to contact you soon.”

"Yeah, you take care of yourself now! Don't get arrested! I'm looking forward to our 'partnership'." Frankie grinned and gave her a friendly wave, "I'll be seeing you then, Jade."

With that, Frankie kicked her scooter into gear and disappeared into the night. She still needed to finish that level, after all.
