Crisp Fall Air

((Reserved for Jade and Steelbeak, but if you want to join in, just ask!))

Jade was leaning against the edge of a clearly 'closed' donut and coffee shop, and nibbling on a cinnamon sugar donut. Her eyes were fixed on a few orange and yellow leaves that were swirling around near the gutter in front of her. It was starting to get colder out, and the weather change had prompted her sweet tooth. It was this time of the year that she started to loathe her later nights… it was never fun to go out when one could see their breath.

    Which, she could now.

I'll have to pull out my thermal gear… She thought as she gave a small shiver-- more at the idea of being cold than actually BEING cold. She bit her donut and held it in her teeth as she pulled out her phone to double check for messages.

"Nuffink" she said around the cinnamon and sugar. She'd likely call it a night soon, knowing that the demoness rarely contacted her after certain hours.

She tucked her phone away and started walking down the street, continuing to enjoy her snack.

"Dat's one interesting jogging get-up y'got there." A smooth voice said from behind her.

The rooster was leaning against a rather expensive-looking sports car, arms crossed. His perfectly tailored suit didn't even seem ruffled by the slight breeze in the air. He smirked at the woman, and lifted a hand to smooth back his bright red comb, which 'boinged' back into position instantaneously.

"Really though, I do like the color scheme ya got going for ya. Money is my fav'rite color after all, Ah-ah-ah-ah." He laughed, although it sounded more like a gatling gun. A very high-pitched, annoying, gatling gun.

Jade turned, her mouth comically bulging with what was left of her donut. A few crumbs tumbled down the front of her suit as she paused to look over at who had addressed her-- trying not to flinch at that laugh.

After a moment of inspection, she realized she knew who he was… but she had always thought that he had left St. Canard.

She gulped, then cleared her throat, brushing herself off. "Well, jogging is hardly the goal." She said with a small wave of her hand. That smirk was… somewhat unsettling. Perhaps it was because his beak was… well… metal.

"Rumor said you had left St. Canard, Steelbeak." Be conversational-- acknowledge his status-- she was learning quickly how not to completely tick off other villains. "Back for a friendly visit? Or business?"

"Oh? Hard to believe. You look like the joggin' type." He was not subtle in how he glanced at her well-sculpted rear end.

"You heard of me have ya?" He grinned dangerously. "Well it just so happens that I heard of ya too. And your connection to one Mah-lish-ee-yuh Macawber." His accent drawled the name out.

"Matter-of-factly, I was hoping you'd like to join me for a lil chit-chat about our mutual fiery haired femme" He opened up the passenger side to his car.

"Don't worry, I won't bite." A flash of his silver beak. "Unless ya give me reason to. Ah-ah-ah!"

              Was he serious?

She blinked a couple times… rapidly. He was seriously eye-humping her? She expected that kind of behavior from Malicia's henchmen but…. No. We're not going to be flattered by this.

"Well, yes. Most people have heard of you." Was he trying to play modest? Jade eyed the open door for a moment, then narrowed her gaze on him. "How have your heard of my connections?" she didn't exactly advertise, and she knew Malicia was trying to keep their connection downplayed since Jade was supposed to be more… subtle than her normal every-day goon.

              She was a special goon.

Just to keep the conversation going she took a small step towards the car, brushing off the biting comment. "Why do you need to talk about Macawber? If she is a mutual, I am sure she'd prefer to talk to you face-to-face."

Then, more to the immediate point, "And where do you plan on taking me for this… chat?"

He tapped his bill. "If you know who I am, den surely that beautiful brain of yours can figure out who I work for. The Fiendish Organization for World Larceny has eyes everywhere in this city, and we got tabs on all of Macawber's lady-friends." A sly wink.

"Don't get me wrong, you were a hard one ta pin down... you are one pro-fish-ee-unt klepto. But Macawber has clearly nevah heard of securing a cellphone line." He snorted. "Then again she can't even turn on a computer if my intel is correct. Gorgeous Gal. But technologically inclined she is not."

He tapped his foot impatiently at her line of questioning. Why can't dames just do as they're told?

"Naaah, see, I'd rather not risk this handsome mug on a house-call. 'Sides, my superiors wanted to hear from you, and High Command don't mess around wit orders." His hand thrummed against the car door.

"We're just goin' for a drive 'round the 'ol neighborhood. No Final Destination stuff waiting for you at the other end, babe."

She thought on it for a moment longer… She was curious what he meant about FOWL… the only other FOWL agent she had met was Lowkey and that was under some unfortunate circumstances. Since then she hadn't heard anything, or even seen their presence.

Jade shrugged and smiled. The car was a bit more inviting than the cold walk she'd planned on taking. She stepped past him and easily slid into the passenger seat deciding that she might as well jump in head first.

And she couldn't deny that his flirtation-- although creepy-- was kind of endearing. But she'd heard that as part of the rumor too. He was a ladies man.

Off handedly, "What's Final Destination?" she asked.

"Eh... don't worry bout it." He said as he circled round and seated himself behind the wheel.

It was indeed a drive round the "ol neighborhood"... the most grimy, festering, crime-ridden section of the St. Canard one could find. Panhandlers dotted the sidewalk, leaving out hats and cups with the faint hope of making a few dollars. A few homeless were asleep or passed out in doorways and stairwells. A gang of young rats were striding down the street, their beady eyes on the rather expensive-looking car as it passed by.

"Yeesh... whatta dump." He clicked his tongue.

"So, let's about about you, Miss Jade. Assuming dat's your real name." Eyes on her now. "My superiors couldn't help but notice that you've made your way into Macawber's inner-circle. Pretty impressive, you know. She ain't so friendly these days, since that sicko boyfriend of 'ers croaked."

                    • Piper/ Jade

Seeing the blight did make Jade wonder if she was doing the right thing or not… but there had been poor people before. There'd been no change in any of that once Malicia started taking over. She looked out the window, a sad expression on her face, knowing that survival was a bit more important at the moment than solving all the world's ails.

At the switch in topic, Jade sat back, forcing herself to neither cross her legs or fold her arms. Both signs of defense, and she didn't want him thinking that his intel on her had her spooked in any way. She looked back, meeting his eyes directly, trying to read him just as much as she was sure he was trying to read her.

Difference was, he wasn't really hiding anything. She was aware of that-- he'd been unsettlingly up front about what he wanted. She had no doubt he'd eventually just come right out and tell her what this was about.

                      But pleasantries first, right?

"I wouldn't say impressive… I just do my job." And it was literally that. "She's not my BFF, we don't hang out and braid each others hair. She won't even tell me where the key to her diary is." fake hurt expression, then back to normal. "She points at a shiny, I take it, give it to her, she gives me money. That is the extent of it."

                      After a pause.

"And it helps that I am not some psychopathic lunatic bent on screwing the world… figuratively and literally." a shrug. Jade was let in BECAUSE she had such little ambition in terms of full on domination. At least, that was what she assumed...

"And your bosses have taken interest in that fact, because?" Lets face it, Malicia had a few people in her inner circle. Jade was probably the meekest and least prominent of them all....

                      ...Oh...

                      OH.... There's the light bulb.

"Dere's the bigger picture." He grinned wolfishly at Piper's reaction. This dame was smart, he'd give her that. But then again, he wasn't exactly trying to be subtle.

"Whatever Macawber is paying ya? We'll triple it. And with the added bonus of not being uprooted from your vinyl-loving lifestyle. See, we're happy with you being exactly where you are... all nice 'n snuggly in the Tantrum Queen of St. Canahd's comically-oversized bosom."

He jerked the car suddenly to purposely swerve over a puddle, dousing a group of teens in muddied water.

"The only difference is that you'd be working for us, now."

The swerve caught her off guard and tossed her towards his side of the car. Thank you momentum. She waited until he was back on the road before pushing herself back into her seat, brushing her hair back as if nothing more than a gust of wind had unsettled her.

As he continued to speak, she listened, mulling around his words a bit. It was a nice offer, but it rang the too-good-to-be-true-bells.

"And just what am I to do for you all while being 'snuggly' in that comically oversized bosom?" she asked. She knew there had to be more than that. They wanted something from her and he was pussy footing around it.

Or maybe he didn't know what it was.

"Easy: You're gonna share all the deets on Macawber. Tell us what she's up to, what she plans to do... et-cet-era et-cet-era.." He gesticulated.

"In other words you're gonna spy for us. Keep doing what you're doing wit her, and keep us updated. In exchange, we wire you some serious fat stacks that'll match reeeeal nice with your current color scheme." Heck, she can swim in a bed of money for all he cared.

"See, Head Command doesn't have the time or patience for sending in a fresh-face to schmooze with the monster lady, 'specially when you fit the bill already. When you think about it, this kinda opportunity is sheer luck. You just won the F.O.W.L lottery, sweet-cheeks."

                              Oooof course.

She tapped her chin slightly, in thought. Doing it to protect her ridiculous husband was one thing… but if Malicia found out, she'd incinerate her on the spot.

She doubted FOWL would have much interest in keeping her safe.

"I need to think on it." she said with a shrug. "It's a huge risk, one even you aren't willing to take." He'd admitted as much in the first ten minutes of their meeting.

After a small pause. "Would I be officially FOWL, or just some extension and have to report to someone?" Like you.

"You wouldn't be one of ours... more like a, ah... what'd ya call it. External agent. Which essentially means no full dental benefits for you, which hopefully won't break yer haht too much." He didn't seem too surprised by her hesitance. In fact, he'd consider her kinda thick in the head if she jumped at the chance before asking questions.

"Pretty much how it'd go is we'd have an established 'drop-off' point for you to send us the goods. I.e., information and intel on Macawber's extracurricular activities. Every so often High Command might have a specific goal in mind for you -- something they want ya to find out. In those cases, we can contact you privately, offa Macawber's radar. They aren't expecting ya to do anything super fancy like steal objects or stick a wrench in her plans or anythin'. This is all basic information exchange, really."

Jade knew what at least one of those extracurriculars were… she almost pulled a face, but stopped.

Instead, she gave a small shrug. "I'll think on it." she said, folding her hands and stretching them out in front of her. "As generous as the offer is, and I am sure you'll forgive my bluntness, it is almost too good to be true." She leaned forward a bit to look at the center counsel. He had a lot of strange buttons that she was unfamiliar with, and… well… she didn't exactly see another opportunity.

"Like the car. FOWL must pay up, or are you a special case?" she raised a brow in his direction.

He saw how she was eyeing the dash and clicked his tongue. "Look with your eyes, not with your hands."

The car, meanwhile, had come to a rolling stop in front of St. Canard Central Park. "And this ain't exactly a charity, we're paying you for primo recono stuff here. It's Basic Business 101, babe. If we went around double-crossing all our sources, we wouldn't be sitting pretty as the world's most powerful organization. That's what so many of those costumed buffoons don't get: Smart business practices will keep us streets ahead of those 'supervillains'... of course packing away a nuclear missile or two don't hurt either."

He made a sweeping gesture at the park. "Last stop. Perfect spot for contemplatin' a career-switch."

Jade fought the huge desire to outright defy him and start button mashing. If for no other reason than to get his to stop calling her by pet-names. Before she could really make a decision on whether she wanted to change death or not, he continued on with his speech.

She gave a small snort at the missile comment. Typical evil organization tactics. She wondered which European bridge they were going to threaten with it… it was always a bridge after all.

Fortunately the car was slowing to a stop. His trip had taken her quite a ways away from her condo. She would have to cut through the park to get home, but she'd rather do that than have him drop her off closer.

At least he hadn't shoved her out with the car still going. She pulled the door handle and eased herself out of the car. "How do I contact you?" she asked, figuring the diplomatic thing to do would be to show at least an interest. She glanced back, holding the door open a bit so she could hear his answer.

Really now, she had to see that one coming.

"In any case... s'been a real pleasure chatting with you. Truly. I mean, most of the time I end up herding a pretty face into my car they pass out from all their hyperventilatin'. Just too overwhelmed by all this handsomeness I guess, ah-ah-ah-ah!"

Jade's expression shifted to one of slight annoyance, and before the last 'ah' was uttered, she had closed the door.

Really... How pompous. Though there was a small smile playing on her lips. It was pretty entertaining at least, and she rarely met people with such confidence. Other than Malicia herself.

Without a second look back she made her way into the park in the direction of home. She had a bit to think on.
