Three to Tango

-------TWENTY-SEVEN YEARS AGO-------

What makes a great agent of S.H.U.S.H.? One that has- Loyalty, Dedication, Devotion, Honesty, Confidence, Composed, Cooperative, Courageous, Compassion, Disciplined, Observant, Organized, Reliable, Respectful, Responsible, Intelligent, A Strong Sense of Justice...

-

Having any of these traits makes one have the potential to become one of S.H.U.S.H.'s best and the agency is filled with people with individuals with one or more of these said traits- it was an elite government agency that dealt with keeping the peace throughout the globe so it was necessary for their agents to have them.

-

Verónica Cruz was one of the many new recruits fresh from the academy, filled with both nervousness and excitement for her new job. She's always had a passion for helping people, prior to attending the academy she was a mere Spy for the American Government so the work didn't seem that much different to her-- just on a larger scale is all.

-

It was lunch time and the Red Robin had got a chicken salad and a can of Pep from the cafeteria, looking around for a spot to sit...Everywhere looked full and she thought of taking her food to her desk when she recognized a duck and owl agent from Orientation sitting together with a spare chair left at the table they sat in.

-

Hopefully they won't mind, they were all new recruits after all!

-

Taking a breath and letting it out slowly, she approached the table with a friendly smile. "Excuse me, is this seat taken?"

The owl agent, who had his back to Verónica, swivelled his head around at... a very disconcerting angle that used to make his peers uncomfortable. The look on his face, however, was very pleasant, as he smiled and nodded, scooting over so she could sit down next to him.

"I'm John Hooter." He offered his hand to shake. "Nice to meet you."

The taller mallard at the table with smoothed back hair winced at his friend.  "You know I hate it when you do that, John."

Once his friend had made his pleasantries, Jacob stood up and took Verónica's hand, giving it a kiss if she let him.  "I'm Mallard...Jacob Mallard.  It's a pleasure."  He gestured to the empty seat.  "Please, join us."

He sat when she sat.  "I don't know about you, but I'm glad training's over.  I can't wait to travel around the world thwarting evil."  His gaze was sincere, but his smirk belied a charming flirtatiousness.

Verónica was taken aback by how the owl had turned his head. Did that not hurt him to do that? Smiling it off, she took his hand and shook it. "Likewise, I'm Verónica Cruz."

          -

Once again the reb robin was surprised, a slight pink color came to her cheeks upon the mallard's introduction, but her smile remained. "My what a gentlemanly greeting, Jacob."

          -

"I thought nothing would beat the U.S.A. Military training, but I was proven wrong." She chuckled, opening her soda and taking a sip.

          -

"As much as I took great pride and joy serving my country, I am greatly looking forward to serving S.H.U.S.H. and its goals of world peace."

John gave Jacob a playful smirk. "That is why I will never stop doing it."

He chuckled and shook his head at his best friend's remark, but his eyes shone with as much eagerness. "Don't get too excited. They'd likely put us on police duty or something. I'm just relieved we wouldn't be seeing Pondrains again. Did you really have to do that to his personal bathroom just before graduation night?" He put his arms on his hips and lifted a brow, amused.

Verónica's words caught his interest. "You were in the military?" he asked curiously.

Jacob looked at John out of the side of his black eyes.  "Of course I did, John.  A bit of harmless fun is just what that stuffed-shirt needed.  You saw the look on his face during the ceremony."  He laughed.  "Boy did he reek."

At his friend's question, he also looked at Veronica with interest.
