Battle of the Dads

It was a normal day off work so far for the female blue jay- call her parents, shower, make breakfast and clean up her apartment a little before heading out to buy groceries for the week-- perhaps she could go by the music shop later for some multi-cultural music or go to the library to learn more of the world?

-

Oh! She could make little homemade snack baskets to send to her three favorite heroes! She'd done that a few times, she never knew if they ever ate them-- she hoped they would!

-

Whistling as she locked up her apartment and walked off, she smiled happily- excited for what all the great things the day would bring her! What she wasn't expecting was to suddenly come face-to-face with another female blue jay. The two could pass off as twins easily enough, passerbyers would think that for sure they were.

-

They were not related-- they were the same person, just from different dimensions...and different personalities.

-

Feliciana looked at her doppelganger quizzically before smiling brightly, giving her a friendly wave. "Ciao!" She greeted the other warmly in her native language. "What brings you to this universe?"

NegaFeliciana glared at her counterpart, her arms crossed over her chest and her eye twitching. If there was anything she was passionate about-- it would be of her hatred of this particular dimensional double. So naive. So innocent. So happy-go-lucky. So sickening. Today that would end though-- she had created a potion which would erase this pain in the ass from existence once and for all! Getting her to take it will take no effort.

-

"I wanted your opinion on something." NegaFeliciana answered, taking the bag off her shoulder and opening it, pulling out a small quackerware container. "I baked something for once...I thought maybe...You would like it..." God it was killing her to even pretend to be nice.

-

The oblivious and naive blue jay gasped in surprise, beaming happily as she took the container. "Ooo! I knew you had a good side!"

-

Without saying anything more, Feliciana had opened the container and devoured the baked good inside without hesitation.

-

NegaFeliciana grinned maliciously as her doppelganger ate the poisoned treat, soon she will see her most hated foe collapse to the ground-- dead as a door-nail! "I DID IT!! FINALLY! I--"

-

NegaFeliciana's jaw dropped at the sight before her. No! No! No! She was supposed to be dead! Not...Smaller? How?! She stomped about in frustration. "This. Was not. Supposed. To. Happen!!!" Turning around, she set eyes on the scared looking child. Well, killing her with her own hands was always her preferred method anyway!

-

The child screamed as the strange older blue jay charged at her, holding her head as her body began to glow gray-- her magic was reacting to her emotions, much like it would in any magic user if they had no control of it.

-

NegaFeliciana suddenly found herself in a trash can within a blink of an eye. She let out a roar of anger. First her potion didn't work, now her foe is a damn child! A child that had no control over magic, which made her more dangerous...What was it that her boss' doppleganger liked to say?

-

Oh yeah. Let's. Get. Dangerous!

-

The child fell to her knees as the magic faded away-- as she fell she had scrapped her knee, she held it tight as it bled while she sobbed silently.

Donald sipped on his coffee as he perused the newspaper. The headline read, "SHUSH's Rising Star Goes AWOL". He eyed the article worryingly. They were talking about Feliciana Carioca-Pistoles, Donald's god-daughter. He hoped that she was alright, but didn't dwell on it too much. She knew what sort of jobs she was getting into with SHUSH. He trusted her to handle herself.

A knock on the door drew him away from the paper. He wasn't expecting any guests today. Probably some businessman wanting to peddle his wares.

He walked to the door and opened it. He was surprised to see his friend, Drake Mallard from St. Canard, standing there with a bluejay girl by his side. Behind him, more like. She kept herself hidden, only peeking out once or twice.

Something about her was incredibly familiar, but he couldn't quite place it.

"Drakester," greeted Donald, holding out his hand. "To what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?"

        Earlier..

Darkwing had been in the area when he had heard the scream and immediately went to the source. No one hurts a child on his watch!

What he found was a sobbing blue jay who looked rather familiar despite being younger.

"Oh boy."  He looked down at her. "What happened? Are you alright?"

        ***

        In the present.

The moment Donald opened the door he was greeted by Drake. "We have a little problem." He gestured to Feliciana.

Donald looked at the bluejay, then back to Drake. Then back to the bluejay. Then back to Drake.

A strange familiarity was nagging at Donald's brain almost like he had a kinship with this little girl, but for the life of him, he couldn't place why he felt this way.

He turned again to Drake, puzzled, an eyebrow raised. "And how exactly does this 'problem' concern me...?

Donald got his answer in a roundabout way. Another drake leaned into view as if he had been lurking just to one side of the doorway. There was a distinct and close familial resemblance to the other Mallard, although this new one had a lot more going on in terms of hair and sunny smiles. He was wearing a casual suit, or perhaps just wearing a suit casually, with his necktie a little loosened and a raffish pocket square that looked like it had been tucked into the breast pocket with effortless aplomb. He had been told to wait in the car, but as someone who made it a point to defy authority, that was an order that had been primed to fail.

"Hi," he said, cheerfully. He indicated Drake with his thumb and said, "I'm his hotter, younger brother who, unlike him, happens to be multilingual which is why I'm here, too. This little miss is Feliciana, and she's mostly speaking Italian today."

"Oh, hey there, Quivy," said Donald, seeing Drake's other-universe counterpart walk up. This visit had the beginning out of a TV show he saw last night, except he was living it.

And that's when Quiverwing said her name.

His eyes widened and his beak dropped in shock. No. This couldn't possibly have been her. His goddaughter, Feliciana was standing right outside his door, and...she was a little girl again?!

"Great howlin' crashwagons!" he shrieked. Feli was still behind Drake, glancing to each of the older ducks.

Donald pushed Drake aside and scooped Feli up into his arms. "Oh, Feli. Oh, mio bambino povero..." He was thankful once again for the Italian lessons One had given him all those years ago when Feli was younger. He never thought he'd need them again.

"What the ding dong is goin' on here?" he hissed to the two Drakes.

Feliciana hid behind Drake, sucking on the lollipop given to her. She only tagged along cause the two ducks as the duck with the bow and arrow was the only one she could understand and vice versa. He said they would get help her. Maybe they knew her grandparents!

                -

Confusion came when they pulled up to a houseboat in an unfamiliar place, she frowned as another duck appeared as she clung onto Darkwing's leg, taking a peek every so often. How was this stranger gonna help?

                -

This duck talked funny...If he was even talking? Her eyes widened as she was suddenly in the stranger's arms. It scared her as she started to cry, her eyes glowing gray as her magic acted up as a response to its user's distress.

                -

What if they were with the big bear that took her away from her grandparents?!

                -

The blue jay was suddenly at the end of the driveway- a short distance away from the three ducks.

                -

"Non voglio tornare indietro!" She yelled before running off, crying in fear as she did.

One moment he was hugging his poor goddaughter, the next there was only air. Donald gasped, waving his arms around briefly. "Huh? W-where did-" He looked around to spot Feliciana at the curb, scared half to death. Before Donald could register what exactly it was she said in her native tongue, she took off down the street.

"WAK! Feli, wait! Come back!" he yelled, rushing after her. It was plainly obvious that her size wasn't the only thing that had been compromised since he saw her last. This was bad.

                    Drake Mallard

That description of himself caused Drake to snort and his feathers to bristle slightly for a brief moment from annoyance. "I see that you already have met my vainer than a peacock of a younger brother of mine."

                    Who's pushing it.

"But yes. He helped me because she couldn't understand me and I couldn't understand her either. She was very scared and crying when I found her." He scratched his head at the question. "I don't know what's going on. But something or someone must have changed her into a child."

His eyes widen when she suddenly vanished. "Wha?!" He turned in the direction Donald was looking just in time to see her running off. "How did she get down there? Oh no. We have to go after her!"

                    He dashed off after her.

                    • Quiverwing Duck
                      Quiverwing Duck

"Piove sul bagnato," remarked the younger Mallard, shaking his head. He cupped his hands around his beak and called after the running child in what could only be called 'the reasonable dad voice'. "Feliciana! Altolà! Vi stiamo aiutando, bambina!"

But, he knew what scared kids could be like, and they didn't always respond to assurances like that. He certainly never had. Looking around at the suburban neighborhood, he muttered, "Why did he have to live in a rural area?" There weren't any buildings to scale or swing from, his usual tactic if he had to chase someone and cut off their flight path. It was going to have to be low rooftops, fences, and--ugh--trees again. He dashed off on a slightly different route than the others.

The child continued running, not turning back when Quiverwing called out to her. They didn't wanna help her, they wanted to put her back in that place! She got her freedom back and she would never give it up again!

                        -

Feliciana had no idea where she was running to- she had never been here before, she knew she wasn't in Italy anymore...She didn't know how that happened either. All she knew was that she was never going to go back to that place.

                        -

She continued to run, looking around for some place to hide safely.

Donald saw Quiverwing dash off in a separate direction and start climbing a tree. What did he think he was doing? "Hey, Quivy! Feli's goin' that way!"

The drake didn't hear him. Donald shook his head and continued running after Feliciana. The route she took was odd, to say the least. It was like she had no idea where she even was.

                          This was really bad.

Donald started to pant. She was speedy, even at the age of six. He was starting to lose her.

"This isn't the rural area!" Drake facepalmed after catching the remark before the other drake had taken a different route.

"Feliciana! Come back! You'll get hurt!"

Just like he was about to be.

Since he had his eyes locked onto her and wasn't paying attention to his surroundings, he didn't notice the ditch.

Drake yelped as he plummeted straight down into the hole after notcing he couldn't feel the ground under his feet and right into knee deep mud.

"Great. It had to be mud." He grumbled as he tried to climb out of the sloshy mess he had landed in. "Oh. It's everywhere."

The blue jay continued running straight into the center of Duckburg during rush hour of all times.

                              -

Clearly being unable to read signs, Feliciana ran straight out into the busy street despite the bright red sign that read- "DO NOT WALK". Some people nearby even tried to call for her to come back, some tried to get her before it was too late, but none prevailed.

                              -

Tripping over a plastic bag in the middle of the crosswalk, she fell over, landing face first on the road. When she attempted to get up, she failed due to having twisted her ankle. Tears fell from her eyes, but the worst was yet to come-- a car was headed straight for her with no sign of stopping! The driver was an ignorant teen on spring break, who was texting while driving.

                              -

Feliciana was too scared to move, she screamed and covered her eyes. This was all just a scary dream! Or so she tried to tell herself. "AIUTO!!!"

One of the trees planted in the verge by that road shook and suddenly erupted with several birds. The small ones flew up into the sky chirping with alarm. The big one in the suit and tie also seemed to fly, although his trajectory was angled downwards.

The Mallard scooped Feliciana up with one arm, his other extended to break his fall. When his palm hit the pavement, he flipped over and up in a handspring just as the heedless teen's car zipped by. The vehicle in the next lane had been unaware of the situation in the crosswalk, and the driver was surprised to have a drake holding a little girl lightly land on the hood, run two steps, and jump off the other side.

Standing on the island in the middle of the street, Drake the younger gently hugged Feliciana, patting the back of her head soothingly. "È tutto a posto, piccola. Ti sei fatto male?"

The child braced herself for impact, but instead felt herself being picked up? Despite her confusion, she instinctively clung tightly onto her savior , she looked up to see that the one who had saved her from the vehicle was one of the people that she was running away from-- also the only one she could really understand.

                                  -

"M-Mi hai...Salvato?" That's when the moment of realization hit her- the people she was running from truly did want to help her, they didn't want to take her back to that scary place!

                                  -

"Mi dispiace di aver pensato che fossi una persona cattiva paurosa, signore!" She apologized through her sobs, hugging the mallard tightly.

Donald slowed down at the busy downtown intersection, panting and wheezing with all his exertion. He arrived just in time to see Quiverwing hugging Feli close as the traffic whizzed by. He had a feeling she was just saved from a bad situation but it was quickly shoved to the back of his mind just seeing her safe again.

"Good goin', Quivy!" he panted, hands on his knees. "You got her! Phew!" He fell onto his back, wiping his brow. "Goodness, I'm bushed..."

Drake was the last to show up as he was embarrassed that he failed and had fallen into mud. Luckily, he only bruised his knees and not twisted anything when he fell. Unfortunately, his ego had been bruised as well.

He was upset by both the fact he was clumsy and made a fool of himself, but once again his brother had managed to show him up as usual.

"One word and bang! You're going to the moon!" The mud caked duck said when he had found them. He was covered from nearly head to toe in mud. It was all over his face and even on his favorite sweatervest.

"Get her back to the car. She'll be safe at my house and I need to get cleaned up."

He snickered but quickly stopped as a globule of mud dripped off Drake's beak and nearly onto Donald's shirt. He scooted out of the way just in time.

All the adults were seated in Drake's living room, silent. Feliciana was in one of the armchairs, looking around at the room and its average furnishings.

Donald scratched his cheek, thinking about what had happened. How did it even happen? She was a bright agent of SHUSH just yesterday, now she was a child. It was just like the first time they met when Panchito and Jose brought her to America. It was unbelievable, and there was no way in Donald's mind that it happened by accident.

"Something's up," Donald began, standing up. "This can't have just been a stroke of dumb luck. We need to find out if Feli remembers anything." He turned to look at Quiverwing. "Can you ask her, Quivy? Your Italian is better than mine."

"Va meglio, cuoricino mio?" he said, gently. He spoke quietly with the child in Italian, asking her if she could remember what happened, because they needed to know more in order to help her.

He looked back at the other adults. "As an aside, while I'm certain this situation will get solved sooner or later, what happens in the meantime? If it takes longer than a day to bring her back to her correct age, well... she's too young to be left on her own."

Feliciana laid on her stomach on the floor of the older Drake's living room, humming happily as she was coloring on a blank piece of paper given to her.

                                            -

When the younger Drake approached and spoke to her, she frowned. "...Ricordo di essere scappato dal grande orso spaventoso che mi ha portati via dai miei nonni...Poi..."

                                            -

She furrowed her brows as she tried to remember how she got from Italy to...Wherever this place was.

Then she remembered the scary and angry looking woman that tried to attack her, taking another piece of blank paper she began to draw a tall blue jay with onyx eyes with an angry scowl, their hair long and straight. The blue jay wore a black corset top with silver buttons from the collar to the hem in a straight line and a pair of blue jeans that had definitely seen better days and she wore heeled combat boots that went up to her knees with lacing from the top of the shoe to the end.

                                            -

The blue jay held up the drawing for all of the adults to see- said drawing was almost a spitting image of Feliciana as an adult, except angry and dressed in dark colors.

                                            -

"Questa signora cattiva ha cercato di prendermi, ma poi è scomparsa..." She then pointed to the older Drake. "Poi mi ha trovato e ti ha chiamato...Sei due fratelli?" She asked curiously.

((TRANSLATIONS- I remember running away from the big scary bear that took me from my grandparents....Then...

I was suddenly here, not in Italy

This mean lady tried to get me, but then she disappeared.

Then the purple duck found me and called you.

                                            Are you guys brothers?))

                                              Quiverwing Duck

The younger Drake rubbed his chin as he listened to Feliciana explain what happened to her. Although, if this was a transformed Feliciana, it didn't quite add up. Then again, she thought they were all strangers; that was a memory issue.

While the child drew her picture, Drake looked to Donald and said, "She remembers being in Italy, running away from some bear who kidnapped her from her grandparents. Did that happen to her when she was a kid? Er... a kid, the first time around?"

When the little jay held up her drawing, Drake looked at it, then to the other two men to see if it rang any bells. "She says that when she realized she wasn't in Italy, a woman who looked like this was after her."

Her question brought his attention back to her, and then he too was pointing at the older Drake and them himself. "Io e lui? Sì, più o meno." He smiled at Feliciana and spread his hands in a little shrug. Then, he said, "Disegni molto bene, passerotta."

((Translations: "Him and me? Yes, more or less." "You draw very nicely, little bird/fledgling/duckling (affectionate term)."))

Donald listened to Feli, then to Quiverwing's translation. He rubbed his forehead, tiredness descending on him. This was exactly like when she was found by her adoptive parents, Panchito and Jose. Just amazing. He was certain neither he nor them were up to raising her all over again. Nothing against Feli, but parenting was hard. Donald had too much experience with that when his sister left her triplets behind.

Donald studied the drawing. It was crudely drawn and not colored entirely inside the lines, but it was still very readable, and the bluejay on the page looked strikingly similar to an adult Feli, if perhaps eviler.

                                                Wait. Eviler...?

"Hold on, she's mentioned a bluejay trying to off her a couple times before." His eyes went wide. "Omigosh," he gasped, "could this be a Negaverse Feliciana or something?"

He rushed to Feli's side. "Alright, she's going to stay with me until we figure out who this bad bird is!"

When they had gotten to his home, Drake had disappeared for a bit to shower and clean the mud off himself. He had dressed in clean clothing that consisted of a casual button shirt that he wore under a linen vest after he was clean.

"Possibly. The person in the drawing looks like her. She might be the reason Feli is a child." Drake had paused in drying his hair that he had been doing while listening to the convo. Then he frowned a bit. "I would rather she stay here. Where she'll be safe and have a quicker escape route. Plus, she'll be close by while we search for this NegaFeli."

                                                    Feliciana Carioca-Pistoles

"Freddo, vorrei avere un fratello o una sorella." She remembered how bored and lonely it would get when her grandparents were doing chores or working, leaving her all by herself.

                                                    -

Blinking as the duck in a sailor suit rushed to her side, she looked up at him curiously. He looked worried. Wonder if it was because of the scary mean lady she drew?

                                                    -

Like most children, she shrugged it off and went back to coloring the picture she was originally making- herself and two bigger blue jays, both had glasses and had grey hair feathers, her grandparents. They were all riding horses-- Feliciana always loved horses, they were her favorite animal! All happy under a smiling sun.

                                                    -

That's when a thought occurred- these guys all knew her name, but she didn't know them.

                                                    -

Oh, they must be police officers! Her grandparents must have called them once the big scary bear took her!

                                                    -

Before she could ask the 'officers'-- rather 'officer' that understood her to take her home, her stomach growled.

                                                    -

"Signore, posso avere del cibo?" She asked the Younger Drake, putting a hand on her stomach.

((Translation- "Cool, I wish I had a brother or a sister."

"Mister, can I have some food?"))

"Sì, certo, passerotta." The younger Drake nodded to the child. "Stiamo parlando di dove dormirai finché risolviamo il problema."

"Although I realize this goes without saying, I'm going to say it anyway." Drake held up his index finger in a declamatory gesture as he looked to the other adults. "I'm the only one who can fluently converse with her. She's welcome to stay with me, I have a guest room, and my daughter is only a couple years older than her. Oh..."

He moved his hand so that he was pointing at the older Drake rather than at the ceiling. "Also, she's hungry, do you have something she could eat?"
