Magic and Death

They say in your last moments you will see your life flash before your eyes.

-

An egg had hatched and from that egg came a featherless baby blue jay, chirping happily as it was lifted by another blue jay- one that was fully grown and had beautiful blue feathers. It was her birth.

-

She remembered being scared as her grandmother hid her in the closet, begging her not to make a sound no matter what she hears. She remembered hearing screams and screaming herself as she was taken away by a tall and muscular bear. It was the end of her grandparents.

-

She remembered escaping from the facility that caused her so much pain both mentally and physically as they conducted their experiments on her. She remembered being saved by a rooster and a green parrot, who would later take her in as their own. It was the start of a new life.

-

She remembered her first day in a job where she was told her abilities would do some good to the world- something she had always wanted to do ever since her days in that cursed facility. The start of her career.

-

The last thing she remembers? Getting a phone call from her superior- James Wolfe, he was demanding to know her location. The reason why? She couldn't remember because all of the sudden...She blacked out.

-

It was an assassination attempt. Did it fail or did it succeed?

Barely a second later, a dark, shadowy form came into view, like smoke rising from a fire. When things like these happened, he was always summoned.

Stepping forward, he held up an ancient scroll, peering at it carefully before looking at the body itself.

Then he spoke, his voice an echo-y, deep voice that seemed to rebound around one's head.

      "Miss Feliciana Carioca-Pistoles?"

Not everyone would answer back, but he thought it formal to address the names of people he was about to claim. Like a dentist asking for their next patient and- oh...

Ugh, death from multiple antimagic healing-inhibited bullet wounds. What a mess. Although, that's why he was here. To clean things up.

Death readied his scythe, and started to swing it in a powerful curve, then stopped, inches from her body. The blue fires flickered as he again scrutinised her fallen form. Something wasn't right-

      She was still alive...

The fault those strangely fashioned bullets always seemed to have... it would prevent any blood loss, thus slowing the death of the individual. As long as it wasn't lodged in anything vital.

He reached out a skeletal hand, and rested it on her head.

"Err. Can you hear me? I know this looks bad, but you have to fight it. Help will-"

A passerby happened to see the bluejay's broken and bloody body, and let out a shrill scream and pulled out her phone.

      There it is.

Wait, why is she snapping a picture?

Eventually, she did call the police and ambulance.

By this point, Feliciana would start to wake up. Not in her own body, however...

And the first thing she'd set eyes on was the dark, hooded figure with a very long, very large scythe.

      How cheery.

      • Feliciana Carioca-Pistoles

Her eyes widened upon seeing the dark hooded figure and jumped back to gain some distance from what she believed to be an attacker.

        -

        That's when she noticed something...

        -

A body was on the ground and covered in a pool of their own blood. Wait.

        -

        THAT'S HER BODY!!!

        -

        "DIO MIO!!!"

        -

She screamed, clearly panicked as she held onto her head.

        -

        No. No. No.

        -

Wait, if she's dead then that means that hooded figure is...

        -

        "Il maestro della morte!"

Death nodded, his arms folded. He did not look impressed or scary or anything. He was just... there.

"Yes. How very observant of you, Miss Carioca-Pistoles."

The ambulance soon arrived, and very carefully, the paramedics lifted her body onto a stretcher and into the van, driving off. Feliciana would feel a strange pull on her body, like it... wanted her to follow it.

Death drew his scythe and advanced towards her, tapping the blade on the palm of his hand.

"Now... if you come quietly, I won't hurt you... much."

Yes, she wasn't dead. Not yet. And no, he did not intend to take her until she did. But he reckoned, here she was, and he seemed to have a free hour, so the least he could do was keep her occupied and have a bit of fun. People who 'woke up' while in comas got bored so easily, and they liked pranks and fighting, right?

Of course, he could tell her her heart was still beating, but he did not want her to get her hopes up.

          • Feliciana Carioca-Pistoles
            Feliciana Carioca-Pistoles

Feliciana resisted the pull for her fear and curiosity of Death was far greater than it.

            -

Normally she was a talkative person, but she was too confused and scared to do much of anything. She hadn't been this scared since her days in the facility...

            -

            "...C-Can I ask...Where we're going...?"

"Where do you think all the bad girls go?" Death asked grimly, and swung his scythe-

Lightly tapping the wooden end of the scythe on her head.

"Did I get you?" he asked, chuckling softly. "I am getting very good at these pranks."

              A beat, then-

"Oh but you are still at my door, however. That part isn't a joke. Right now your body is deciding if it should live or die. This-" he gestured to her spirit form "-is partly my fault. You should be with your body, but I may have had a hand in waking you... it happens to some coma victims," he added defensively. "So, depending on how well your body copes, you'll get back in there soon."

Wait a second! She wasn't a bad per--

                -

OH GOD THE SWIPE OF ETERNAL PEACE!!!

                -

Closing her eyes, she braced herself for it, but was surprised upon feeling a tap instead. Opening her eyes slowly, they went to the wooden end of the scythe before looking at Death- confusion and fear in her eyes.

                -

A prank? Who plays jokes with life?!

                -

Oh. Wait. Death probably would, huh?

                -

"D-Do I need to be with my body in order to wake up...?" She stuttered, getting anxious. When she got anxious, she tended to ramble.

                -

"I don't think I'm ready for that yet-- I mean, I know it's up to you and not me, but believe it or not I'm a really good person with two loving fathers and if I die, I'm sure my superior will just find a way to train in hell. Not that I'm saying his training or himself is hell! I believe he's a good person, I mean- SHUSH wouldn't hire him if he was bad, right?"

                -

She could go on if not stopped.

Death leaned on his scythe and peered at her over his laced fingers, a very casual act for the reaper man, but to most people, it looked exactly like a cat observing its weak, defenceless prey. He had failed to notice it and probably never would.

He offered to answer her questions, but she kept rambling on amd on and not allowing him to speak, so in the end, he impatiently snapped his fingers. "Shut up."

Feliciana would suddenly feel very obliged to obey him.

"First off, no, you do not need to be near your body. I would not recommend it anyway. Unless you are used to shock, the sight might place stress on both you and the people around you. Second of all, I do know you are a good person. Did I not state that I was pranking? However, whoever you are, be it a commoner or a king, or a thief or a philanthropist, I am inevitable, and you can never escape me. Thirdly, I cannot judge your superior, but Mr. Wolfe should be the least of your concerns right now. Are there anymore questions?"

                    Feliciana Carioca-Pistoles

The blue jay's mouth closed and she stopped talking. Huh. That's never happened before. Does he also have the power to make her to whatever he wanted?

                    -

Well, she was in between life and death, so that does make sense that he could do that.

                    -

"Two more actually." She smiled nervously. "First, can you like control those that have passed or linger in between? Cause when you told me to shut up and I just felt the urge to obey." Her nerves was kicking up again, being controlled by someone was not something she wanted...Not again.

                    -

Taking a moment to calm down, she then looked at him curiously. "The second question is...Do you like having to do this task for all of eternity? Like it's an important task, I understand, but...If given the opportunity, would you rather do something else?""

                    -

What an odd one, this blue jay.

"Oh, you mean when I told you to be silent? I have that effect on everyone," Death said in a neutral tone. "You were being irritating and would not let me speak. This was a logical approach... is it not?"

He stood quiet for a moment at the next question, then sighed, a quiet, rattling sound.

"I'd rather not answer, if it's all the same to you. I am who I am, and I do only what I have known to be right. Wishing for something I can never have is pointless."

                      And painful.

                        -

"I don't think it's pointless at all, if it was, then--"

                        -

She glanced down sadly, recalling her early life.

                        -

"...Then I wouldn't be the person I am today."

                        -

She looked back up at him with a small smile. The thought of the person she could have been if she didn't take that chance to escape and stayed in the facility...It scared her to think of.

                        -

"I always believe in taking chances to change no matter what, but I respect your answer."

Death looked like he was rolling his eyes. "And that is where the difference between mortals and entities lie. We don't have a freedom of choice, each of us has a part to play. I will say this... being the reaper of souls is..." he thought for a moment "...interesting. I've learnt so much and more about mortals than my colleagues."

The blue jay frowned upon hearing that. "That just doesn't seem fair..."

                            -

Her eyes lit up as he mentioned learning, it was a passion of hers. "Wow! That sounds super freddo that you know so much! Learning is a passion of mine!"

"Indeed," Death nodded approvingly. This woman had the right priorities. This was why mortals were fascinating. They were the same species, but they were all so different. "I have had over several millennias to acquire an expertise in many fields. If you existed as long as I have, you would have time to gain so much knowledge. And learning is infinite. You never run out."

Probably also because he travelled through all sorts of dimensions frequently.

He frowned at a thought as he spun his scythe idly, the blade making a whistling noise as it split atoms in the air over and over.

"It gets a bit lonely at times. But it's to be expected, in my line of work."

When he mentioned being lonely, she gave a sympathetic frown- she could relate.

"Well, I'll keep you company until I wake up!" She offered with her usual cheery smile.

"I would like that," he said with a shrug. "As long as it does not bore you."

A cat walked past them and hissed, fleeing.

"Perhaps we should go somewhere... quieter."

And that was how they ended up in the library, after a quick teleportation.

"You won't be able to touch any of the books, unfortunately. However, you can ask me anything you don't know."

She informed with a grin, blinking curiously at the cat and frowned upon it's reaction. Well, that solves the question on whether or not animals could sense spirits or not.

                                    -

Surprise overcame her as their location suddenly changed. Sure, she was used to teleporting thanks to her magic, but to be teleported without knowing? Well, she suddenly knew how others felt. Looking around, she smiled- this was her favorite place!

                                    -

After hearing his warning of not being able to touch them, she let out a pout and hummed thoughtfully at his words.

                                    -

"Tell me about yourself?" She blinked curiously, smiling up at him. "Surely there's more to you than just being death, right?"

"Are you hitting on me? Because, err... I'm not interested..."

Regardless of her answer, he would just give a small shrug. "All right. I will tell you. I was never born, I just... came into existence, when the first human died. I am like a bridge between the mortal realm and what lies beyond, guiding the spirits of the departed to go where they need to be. I've always done my job without question. I didn't care for mortals. I do what I only know is right."

Although no part of his face could be seen, he seemed to be smiling wistfully.

"And then I met a child. He was no more than ten, who fell at the hands of Famine. He gave me a lot of trouble, taking my scythe. I chased him for months. Souls were piling up everywhere, but it was an interesting three months, you know. We went to a faire and everything. Then I took him away. That is where my fascination for humans grew."

He gazed at Feliciana. "I don't kill people. But I also cannot prevent death. The only thing I can do, is take. Sometimes, if it is someone I care about, it can be... hard."

The temperature dropped a little before he shook himself out of it. No use looking back. The past was in the past.

"I'm sorry I asked, I didn't mean to bring up bad memories!"

                                            -

"Did you know there are other universes?" She asked quickly in order to change the subject. "Are there like other yous for those universes or do you go to all of them?"

Death apparently was bad at understanding jokes, because he frowned deeply and crossed his arms. "No. Didn't you hear me? Souls need me to send them off."

The hug took him by surprise, though, but after Gladstone, nothing really surprised him anymore, and he just responded by patting her head. The bluejay, however, would get a pretty unpleasant one as a freezing cold washed over her upon touching the reaper.

"There is only one of me," he said. "And yes, I am very well aware. I'm always around where they need me most."

"Wow, so you really know it all!" Her eyes sparkled in awe, amazed by what she saw as her new friend.

                                                -

"Being the only one sounds super lonely and sad though..." She frowned at the thought, she remembered what being alone all the time was like- she hated the feeling, hated that she could never forget it, but she tried her damnedest to make sure nobody ever felt lonely if she could help it!

                                                -

To her nobody deserved to be lonely be it friend or foe, so why should Death be an exception to this?

                                                -

"So, what do you like to do for fun? You know like in your free time whenever you aren't reaping souls from across the dimensions?"

Death looked wistful. "I used to spend it with someone... important to me. Now, I just keep souls like you company. There were a few others before you. But some people forget because they want to. They write it off as a dream. I do not blame them."

He looked at her. "And you? Do you have anything you would do in your leisure? Do you have someone you would spend that time with?" A thought occurred to him and he frowned. "I hope they are not too worried."

"I don't see myself wanting to forget this and I don't understand why anyone would." She admitted."You kept them company so they wouldn't feel lonely and terrified upon finding out their dead or close to death."

                                                    -

"I study anything about the world! Cultures, Languages, Music, Dancing, Food!"

                                                    -

"I do have  a lot of friends and family, but I doubt they know about my situation since I live away from them all, but there is one person in St. Canard that I love spending time with and care a lot about..." She frowned and looked down. "...I hope he doesn't find out. I don't want to worry him..."

"Well, it is only natural," Death explained patiently. "People are often terrified of death, and by extension, me. You were afraid too," he pointed out. "You only got through it because it was not your time, and I comforted you. For so many others, there is no return. To escape me is a miracle. So why would they want to remember me when they can live again?"

He looked grouchy now. And it seemed to be affecting the library goers. The aisle they were in had been avoided like the plague, but suddenly a few of the mortals in other aisles near Death seemed to drop everything they were holding to flee immediately for seemingly no rhyme or reason. He sighed, and gazed into Feliciana's eyes. There were pinpricks of blue light... his eyes, the window to the infinite. If you looked into them for too long, there was a sense of bleakness and helplessness. No justice. Only him.

"Most mortals fear things they do not understand. Remember that well, Miss Carioca-Pistoles."

He sat back again and the eyes seemed to disappear in the blackness.

"He is very worried, actually. Are you two... romantically involved?"
