Revenge by Time Top

A year's worth of planning is all it took-- too long in his opinion. How could they let a psychotic maniac like QuackerJack free? He's killed, injured, psychologically damaged many people during his reign on St. Canard. He didn't like the first time the jester reformed and he hates it even more now. That duck should be rotting in his cell in the asylum for the rest of his years and know no freedom or happiness.

-

The judge, the city...They all thought differently now. It infuriated him! Had they not learned from the last time they set this maniac free because he 'reformed'?! Well, this dog wasn't having it! He's going to make that duck pay for what he's done!

-

During the year Thomas cautiously watched the duck-- the dog learned everything about his target- hangouts, favorite places to eat, where he shops, and even...The ones he loved most. A lover and a daughter. It disgusted the dog to think of how anyone could love or make love to such a monster!

-

Oh? She's the reason why he reformed again? Interesting...

-

The Time Top was the only way. Thomas didn't like that he had to use something QuackerJack had made, but it was the only way...If he went back in time and killed him before the two ducks made love...Then the former-criminal would have no reason to reform! How to assure his plan really worked? He'd bring the kid along with! If she vanished- it meant he succeeded!

Jamie was enjoying her gymnastics class she took on Saturdays since both her parents worked during the day. She was a natural, just like her father! Now that class was over, the duckling was humming happily while waiting for her parents to pick her up.

There she was... so innocent and unsuspecting. And since her parents were being kept... busy with some flat tires, this was his chance.

      "Jamie? Jamie!!"

He ran over, looking worried and frantic.

"Your parents got into a bad car accident. I'm a friend. Quick, follow me. I'll drive you to the hospital!"

The redhead was performing front-flips when he had approached her.

        -

Initially she was scared, her parents taught her to never talk or trust a stranger! Though hearing what he said...Put her in a state of shock.

        -

"Th-They did...?" Her eyes swelled with tears before she started crying loudly before hugging the man's leg. "Are they okay?! The doctor's gotta make them feel better!!"

          Ha. Too easy.

"I don't know. They said only family is allowed to visit them!" he exclaimed. "Come on!"

He led her to his car, a dark, unnoticeable colour with tinted windows, opened the passenger door for her, and then got in the driver's seat, driving off quickly.

Little did he know, someone had been watching them both with a suspicious look on his face. He wanted to inform a teacher, but everyone had gone home, and he did not have access to a phone. So, instead, he cupped something in his strange hands, blew on it, and released it towards the vehicle. He then started to follow them on his scooter.

Halfway through the drive, probably when Jamie was starting to realise this wasn't the way to the hospital, it would be too late. The doors were locked shut, and the windows wouldn't open.

Jamie was so concerned about her parents she forgot all about 'stranger danger' her parents and the school taught her as she jumped in the car and buckled up.

            -

After a while of calming down, she looked out the window.

            -

            "Heyyyyyyyyyy!"

            -

            This wasn't the way to--

            -

STRANGER! SHE WAS TRICKED BY A STRANGER!

            -

The duckling began screaming loudly, trying to get the door or window open, but to no avail.

            -
"STRANGER DANGER!!" She screamed as loud as she could while banging on the window as she started crying.

"Shut up, you little brat! Or I'll break your arms!"

Thomas' demeanour, kind and concerned earlier, had shifted into someone slightly unhinged and violent.

It was fortunate they did not see the little boy following them. One mile behind. A scooter could not possibly keep up with a car, after all, but the weeds he'd grown at the back of the car knew. And the weeds told him where they were headed.

There was another voice too. Freaking out and asking for him to come back right now or he'd be grounded. But he ignored it. Someone was in danger! He had to save her! Like his mom always did.

Soon, the car arrived at an abandoned warehouse. The man opened the car door and reached over to grab Jamie.

              "Come here, you brat."

Jamie's screams silenced at the threat she she winced, her cries stopped, but her tears did not.

                -

The car stopped and she looked out the window to see the abandoned warehouse. What was he planning on doing? She wasn't gonna stick around and find out!

                -

As Thomas attempted to grab her, the duckling bit him harshly with her oversized teeth before attempting to escape.

"Ow, you little screw-up!!" Thomas snarled, then pulled out a gun and pointed it at her. "I'm gonna shoot you!"

Okay, Tom, stay calm... you need her alive to make sure that jerk stays dead.

He jammed the gun into her thigh. "Hold still, or I'll blow your leg off," he growled, as he pulled out some rope and duct tape.

As soon as the duckling was properly bound and gagged, he slung her over his shoulder and made his way into the warehouse. He then held her up by the scruff of her neck, making her look at the contraption.

A bright coloured, giant spinning top.

"Take a good long look. Dear ol' daddy made this many, many years ago, and today, I'm gonna use this to kill him," he laughed. "Or, rather, ten years back. Or was it fifteen?" he mused, then shook his head and laughed. "No matter. I'll get back, and then I'll have my revenge!"

He then climbed into the strange gigantic top with Jamie, never noticing the green blur as a young boy darted into the warehouse, stretching his arms unnaturally long and coiling it around the top, trying to pull it off so he could get in and free Jamie.

But as the top bean to spin, he was soon tangled around the giant toy... and it disapeared.

                  ***

                  Fifteen years ago...

"Hoohoohoo! Let's see how everyone at Whiffle Boy con would like walking into exploding bubblegum!!" Quackerjack cackled as he bounced away on a pogo stick. But something made him stop in his tracks and stare.

                  "...heyyy, what's this??"

It was his Time Top. No mistake about it. It had the right colours, shape, everything. But it looked scratched. And some weird green moss-like thing was hanging off the top. Who would dare do this to his baby?

"Sparky? Is that you?? Come out here right now!! I want a word with you!!"

The duckling winced as the gu was jammed into her thigh and remained still as instructed, but continued crying. She wanted her parents or Uncle Elmo to come and save her!

                    -

She blinked a few times at the sight of the top. Her father made that? She knew he was once a bad guy, but she didn't know what all he did as neither her parents wanted to talk about it. The past was in the past is what they taught her so she never bothered asking.

                    -

                    Wait.

                    -

He was gonna go back in time and kill her dad?! No!

                    -

The duckling began squirming and screaming through the gag, hoping that someone was nearby that heard her and that can save her.

                    -

Though once the time top started, her struggles and cries ceased as she shut her eyes tightly. She lost hope of being saved.

"Say goodbye to daddy, little brat," Thomas smirked as the hatch opened, and he climbed out, holding the girl tightly against him and pointing a strange gun at Quackerjack.

"About time! You-" Quackerjack was waving his arms, and he paused when he noticed the people leaving his Time Top.

"Waaaaait a minute. You're not Sparky!"

"Sorry to disappoint!" Thomas fired the gun at Quackerjack, but just at that moment, something green snaked over and yanked Jamie out of his arms, which in turn threw off his aim, hitting a lamppost instead. The whole thing shuddered for a moment, then disintegrated.

"What the-?" Quackerjack blinked. "Are you trying to kill me?? Hey! Get back here with my Time Top!"

Thomas cursed under his breath as he flipped a switch that collapsed the Time Top, pocketed it, and ran around, looking for the girl. What happened? She was right there! He needed her to make sure Quackerjack stayed dead!

He did not notice a small clump of green under a bench as he stalked past it.

When the coast was clear, the moss unfurled, revealing a strange young boy who looked like a strange combination of a duckling and a purple flower.

"Hi! Remember me? I'm in your science class. Ooh, hang on, these ropes are tight..." he struggled to untie them, then pulled off her gag, smiling shyly.

Jamie looked curiously at her father, she'd never seen him wear such a silly outfit. Is that what he wore back when he was a bad guy?

                        -

At the sound of the gunshot, Jamie flinched and shut her eyes tightly

                        -

She opened them back up when she heard a familiar voice speak to her and once she was free, she pulled the mutated duckling into a hug.

                        -

                        "Thank you so much!"

                          Quackerjack

"Oh, uh, you're welcome," Arumcus blushed. Not many people hugged him. This was nice.

Flowers grew by his feet in sync with his emotions. "Oops. Sorry. I do that a lot," he said shyly.

Then he heard a familiar voice in his head.

"Fascinating... I've never felt this presence before. Is it a new plant species? I gotta check it out!"

                          Aruncus stiffened slightly and gulped.

                          "No, please don't!"

"What? You... you can hear me too, and respond intelligently?? Stay where you are, I need to see you!"

"We gotta go," he told Jamie, taking her arm. He got out from under the bench, looked around, then ran.

                          Right into Quackerjack.

"Hey, I know you!" Quackerjack gave Jamie a frown. "You were his accomplice! Get back here!!"

Aruncus started to run the other way.

"Um, do you know if there are any places we could go to hide?" he asked her anxiously.

"That's so cute!" She giggled, picking one of the flowers and sniffing it. It smelled pretty!

                            -

Then she noticed her new friend become stiff. "Are...Are you--?"

                            -

Blinking in confusion at the pull, she followed along anyway, though stopped dead in her tracks upon seeing her dad.

                            -

It was her dad, but yet...It also wasn't. His eyes were different...

                            -

                            "I-I don't--"

                            -

A tree nearby had grabbed hold of both ducklings tightly as Bushroot arrived excitedly, rubbing his leafy hands. "How extraordinary! You look just like me! Oh how magnificent! Finally a friend to understand me!"

                              Quackerjack

"Move aside, Melon-head! These brats' friend stole my Time Top and just tried to kill me!" Quackerjack snapped, giving Bushroot a shove. Then when he grinned at the kids, it was very unsettling and creepy.

"Hey, kids, maybe we got off on the wrong foot. Wanna play with some of my toys?"

Aruncus, in fact, looked exactly like Bushroot, from his purple hair, green, plant-like skin and gentle blue eyes. The only difference was the white tuft of duck feathers growing from his neck.

"NOPE!" he yelled a little too loudly at Bushroot's and Quackerjack's words and tried to command the tree to let them go. It dropped them both, confused with the two Bushroots and their conflicting orders. Aruncus took the opportunity to grab Jamie again and run.

Ugh, he knew he should have brought the skateboard. Or practised closing up his mind. Who thought being telepathic with plants and his dad would turn out to be... not so cool?

The kidnapper soon came back and grinned darkly when he found Jamie.

                              "There you are..."

He then aimed his gun at the clown and fired again, only for Quackerjack to grab Bushroot to shield himself. Save me, Bushbrain!

"C-Can I just....S-Say that big meanie-head is not our friend?" She stuttered out in fear. Was her Daddy really this scary before he met Mommy? "H-He kidnapped us..."

                                -

Jamie ran with Aruncus, her eyes widened upon seeing the kidnapper as she clung tightly to her classmate in fear, shutting her eyes tightly.

                                -

"W-W-Wait!" Stuttered the nervous plant-duck hybrid, and before he knew it, he had withered, but just for a second or two before reforming and turning his head to QuackerJack with a pout. "Why do you all use me as a personal shield? It's very rude!"

                                -

Jamie found relief seeing her father was alright, but took decided to take charge this time and take Aruncus away while the three adults were distracted.

                                -

Bushroot then had his tree pick up Thomas and throw him. "Maybe that'll teach you to respect plant life!" He then turned around.

                                -

"...Where'd my new friend run off to?"

Quackerjack grinned innocently at Bushroot and dropped him. "We can't grow back like you do! You understand, right?"

He didn't look like he cared if he did or didn't.

He frowned as he looked around as well. The girl's words rang in his head. Not like a bell. That only happened when Negaduck hit him too hard. She didn't seem mean. And wasn't she tied up earlier? Maybe she was a hostage! That... that would make more sense. But strangely...

"There was a kid with him. She looked kinda familiar. You seen her before? Hmm... she may be a favourite customer of mine!"

                                  Aruncus meanwhile followed Jamie anxiously.

"Wh-where are we going? We might run into more trouble if we don't know where we are! Wait!" He dug his roots into the ground to stop her. "I might know a place."

"You mean that kid that was with my new friend?" Bushroot blinked and hummed thoughtfully, trying to recall as he snapped his fingers.

                                    -

"Oh! Now that I think about it, she did have a big beak like you do! Which way do you think they went?"

                                    ~~

Jamie ran in a random direction, panting heavily. She didn't know where she was going, she just wanted to get away!

                                    -

Her eyes widened as he stopped the two of them, she caught her breath before looking back at him. "I hope so cause I don't!"

Quackerjack tsked and waved a hand. "It's not that. I feel like I know her... from somewhere. Maybe..."

Then he sighed and shook his head. "Never mind, hey, where did you throw the guy?" He rubbed his hands together. "I wanna ask him a few... questions."

"I don't know w-when this is, but hopefully it's deserted..."

Aruncus slowed and panted. "Oof. Wish I was better at running... but we seemed to have lost them for now..."

He looked around warily, then ventured forward again, beckoning for Jamie to follow him. Soon, a few blocks down, they would reach an abandoned street. Right at the end was an abandoned opera. He stood still for a moment, listening hard, and his facial features relaxed. "Great. It's deserted! Mom must still be staying at Aunt Carol's. Come on!"

The side door was locked, but Aruncus slipped his leafy hand in the lock and wiggled it, soon clicking it open, revealing a flight of stairs going down. It all looked very old, but it was quite clean.

If Jamie followed him downstairs, she would find a small corridor with five more doors. There were a few cobwebs here and there, but it wasn't as dusty as it should be.

"Hmm, it should be..." Aruncus went to one of the doors on the left, but it was a storage room full of costumes. "Ah, no. Not this one. This one?" He walked over to the right side of the corridor and brightened when the first door he tried was the room he wanted. "Bingo!"

He beckoned for her to come in, throwing on the light, a chandelier illuminating the room. It was carpeted, with walls that showed peeling blue paint, except a mirror at the far end of the room. There were a few props around the room, a table designed for medieval ages, a normal chair and a recliner built Ancient-Greece style, along with a few scripts and music scores strewn on the table and floor.

"This was mom's hideout," he explained to Jamie. "She's not here right now, so I thought we could stay for a bit. Sit down! I'll see if there's tea."

As he ran off to check for water, it felt like something was looking at Jamie through the mirror. But there was nothing there...

"Gee, I uh..." The mutant hummed in thought. "I dunno! But I bet I can find out!"

                                        -

He then pointed in the direction in which the tree threw him too. "We can go that way until we find him though! Won't be hard since everyone stays off the streets in these parts."

                                        ~~

Jamie followed, staying close to her new friend as she looked around the place out of curiosity.

                                        -

"Why would your Mommy need a hideout?" She asked curiously, sitting down on the couch sadly as she hugged her knees.

                                        -

As if meeting her father as a villain wasn't scary enough, she had the feeling she was being watched and it scared her even more.

Thomas, meanwhile, was staying in hiding. He lost his gun in the fight, and knew he'd need to find a weapon so he could properly finish off Quackerjack.

He needed to find the girl too... as long as she was still here, it would be proof that insane villain managed to survive. He hated leaving loose ends...

But first, he needed to get his weapon. Or, at least, find his original weapon. The last thing he needed was for the weapon to be traced back to his younger self.

"Oh, she's a superhero," Aruncus explained offhandedly as he poured water into a kettle. "She would take me here to play sometimes. Or teach me ninjutsu. I'm... not very good."

The mirror started to frost over, but it wasn't cold.

Then, there was a light squeaking noise. Something... invisible was drawing on the frost. A smiley face.

                                            A superhero?

                                            -

Hearing that made her eyes lit up.

                                            -

"That's super cool! Maybe she could--?"

                                            -

The duckling cut herself off due to the squeaking noise catching her attention, she turned her head towards where it was coming from and saw a smiley face on the mirror.

                                            -

Like any typical child, Jamie shrieked and jumped off the couch, scurrying under a table to hide.

"Jamie? Are you okay?" Aruncus ran back with a spatula in hand, holding it out nervously as he looked around him. "Jamie?"

Then he blinked and stared at another pair of eyes. Looking at him from the mirror. Even though there was no one else on that side of the room. But he recognised that almost transparent figure.

                                              "Gale?"

The figure had started to hide, then paused when she heard his voice.

"How do you know my name...?" she asked softly, revealing herself as a small girl in a ragged dress.

"Uh... you're my..." Aruncus started to explain, then shook his head. "Never mind."

Jamie stopped cowarding under the table when her new friend came out. "You--You know this ghost...?"

"Uh... sort of. Later," Aruncus made a cutting motion, then ran over to look at the ghostly apparition, his tail wagging. "We're, uh, it's hard to explain, but we're from the future. You're a friend. I think that's all I can tell you," he said apologetically.

"It's alright..." she gave him a gentle smile. "Nice to meet you. You don't have to tell me your names. I am Gale, a singer in the opera, until I got sick and died," she told Jamie. "Please don't be scared. I won't hurt you."

The scared duckling became less so once her new friend explained that this ghost wasn't going to hurt them, and instead became more curious--interested.

                                                    -

"I-I'm sorry for being scared." She apologized. "This whole day has been just one scary thing after another and I just wanna go home...You can call me Jam!"

                                                    -

Not giving out an introduction after the ghost had introduced herself would have been rude, and her parents taught her not to be rude! Except to meanies and strangers.

Gale smiled and nodded. "It's nice to meet you, Jam. The only friend I had here was Harmonizer. But I haven't seen her in a while..." she sighed wistfully. "It's alright. You'll be safe here."

"There's been a jerk who tried to kidnap Jamie," Aruncus explained. "We lost him, but now people we know - well, in the future, anyway - are trying to find us, but we shouldn't let them see us... could you... maybe... go out and scare them?"

Although, it didn't seem nice asking a ghost to scare their dads...

Gale shook her head. "I've been unable to leave since I died here. I wish I could help, but..."

Suddenly, her eyes lit up. "The kids' costume room!"

"Wha-?" Aruncus started, but he grinned as well. "Oh!!"

"Follow me!" Gale said, flying out of the room. Taking Jamie's hand, the plant duck began to guide her to a room he was so familiar with, where he and his mom and dad would play dress up for hours...

"Pick anything you like. Hopefully it will help disguise you," Gale smiled as she gestured to an open door at the end of the corridor, the light already turned on.

There were racks and racks of costumes similar to the one Aruncus had first checked, but these were designed beautifully for children in opera plays. Peter Pan and the Lost Boys, the Railway Children, Princess in the Attic, Tom Sawyer, Oliver Twist, even costumes for kids in the background of several plays, the room had it all.

Grinning, Aruncus picked up a white mask the child Ghost of Christmas Past wore and held it to his face. "What do you think?"
